Plastidip questions

Hi TS'ers

Im looking to Plastidip some items, and was wondering if any other members in Wellington already know of a good source to buy it from?

I see multiple vendors selling it on Trade Me, but if somebody local sells it, then I would prefer to just go and pick it up.

Also, I have read a few threads on forums where people have used it, but if anybody has any tips on the best methods, and cleaning products to use to apply it, Im all ears

Main thing ive heard is to get it on nice and thick, makes it easier to peal off.

Watched a few of the videos from this guy last night , as thinking of doing the wifes mazda 6 wagon........he has a typical pp gun buy the looks

Griffiths Equipment are the distributors in Auckland, maybe all of NZ, might be worth giving them a call to see if there is someone local that sells it. In my experience everywhere sells at the same price.

Getting it on thick and leaving a couple of inches around the area so you can peel it off easily worked for me. Also dont worry if it looks patchy when you put it on, it will dry even.

What part of the car are you planing on doing?

I read last night that Griffiths are the NZ importers, but it seems there are no shortage of people selling it on the tard, so guessed lots of shops would have it too. Although I didnt see any at Bunnings/Repco/Sca a couple of weeks back when I was looking for paint for my intercooler.

Im definitely going to be applying multiple coats, so the end result is worth the time, money, and effort involved, and Im also going to be using their Glossifier product too, to finish the job off, as I cant stand Matte finishes on a cars exterior.

At this stage, Im just looking to do a set of wheels, but am also contemplating intake plenum/cam covers/compressor housing, although Im not 100% at this stage on the plenum as it might stop heat shedding ability.

There's a place in Lower Hutt that sells it but I can't remember the name/the road they're on. They sell o-rings and seals. May/may not be seal imports. Not much help but there are only 2-3 places that specifically do seals down there. Otherwise I think wr twigg stocks it too.

Edit: I think it was pacific seals on Cuba street. Give them a ring and ask.

Why plasti dip ?

I recently did a set of wheels on my legacy and eneded up going for ColourPak 1K Base and Clear Lacquer

Cost about $150 all up for everything (sandpaper, solvent degreaser, scotch brites, tape, masking cards, 2 cans base, 2 cans laquer, 1 primer.)

Super pleased with the results.

Plus you get to pick ANY colour you want.

This ^ is a major reason why I want to try it out.

Not to mention the amount of prep required for a good finish, is extremely little, compared to a traditional paint. That doesnt mean Im lazy, just far more confident of getting a finish that I wont be disappointed with, given Im super fussy.

Also, another one of the main reasons it appeals to me is that it all settles to a smooth layer, provided you keep your tip clean, whereas traditional paints can tend to look a bit patchy if done from a rattle can.

I just went to Repco/SCA, and Bunnings, and none of them carry the rattle packs in stock, although Bunnings did have an extremely small range of the non aerosol version, which is no help to me. They can all order them in though, at roughly the same price at TM, which is circa $30 a can.

Is it tough enough to use on mountain bike wheels?.

From the reports I have read, if you spend enough time doing it properly, with multiple layers, then I cant see why not.

There are chaps who claim to still be running it two years after application on their track wheels, so if it can cope with the extreme temps and stone flicking that they would see on a track car, Im guessing a mountain bike wheel should be fine too

Pleased until you get chips in the paint. At least plastidip is easy to peel off and reapply for nearly half the price and 1/10th of the time you probably spent on your wheels.

If you have one, try an Auto 1 store

That's where I get them from up here in Auckland...

Tip - if using rattle cans...use the whole can in one sitting...if you leave it then use it another day, it doesn't spray as good

I just ordered 3 cans of black, one can of red, and one can of glossifier, and a trigger spraying thingymajiggy.

Ill be sure to document my progress, and post up my results when theyre done

Total was $157 + $13 shipping, but I will still need to buy some oil and grease remover so another $20 or so.

Either way, if I can get my wheels looking fairly good, I will be happy with having only spent $200 on them compared to $150 a wheel for the shop to do it.

Also, they are track wheels so its not like they have to be show car perfect, I would just like them to look the part.

Yes, I thought it was a pretty sharp deal compared to everything else out there. Only a few dollars a can but that makes a difference when buying 5 cans.

I really do hope I bought enough to do an even job, it would suck to start running out just as the gravy stroke approaches :-/
