Oil changes

Postby dnalunchie » Sat Dec 21, 2013 2:03 pm

Hey all

Am about to do an oil change on my corona 1990.

Had two questions, as it got closer and closer to the kms for the change I noticed my fuel economy started to decrease, maybe by 10-20% in the past 1000 kms, could this be due to the oil really needing a change? (has been close to 15,000kms I discovered last week thinking that it was close to 5,000kms lol)

Also second question since the car is a typical 3sfe with 200,000 kms on the engine does it matter hugely what sort of oil I use, Reason I ask is that the link below Castrol GTX Modern Engine Oil & BONUS Spin-On Repco Oil Filter*15W-40, 4L. is what I was going to get since it is such a good deal but if it would be a much better idea to use something else for the age/condition of the engine I would sooner spend the extra money than risk it, same deal with the oil filter type, is it okay?

I know it's not exactly a performance car but it is my daily so it is important to me and my understanding of oil extends to pretty much "ohhhh shiny container with lots of "performance and GT and X letters on it, oh and a race car pic on the back? SOLD!!!!"

If you want to learn a little about the basics of oil, check out BITOG, and do the short test, as it really helps give you a better undertstanding of exactly what means what in the world of oil.

What viscosity do you normally run in your car?

As a rule of thumb, provided you change you oil regularly, the best oil, is the cheapest one in the viscosity range you require.

If it doesn't use heaps of oil, then yeah i'd just go with that combo. Pretty hard to beat, especially just for a cheap daily. I use that oil in all my cars.

No, of course not, though there is much WWW anecdotal tales about it and many other wonderful things that happened with fresh oil inside.
No, of course not but 15,000km does matter hugely if this is a DD with severe operating conditions or tows a trailer.

So much awesome, indeed :)

Far better than applying guesswork to what you need too.

lucky we don't get extreme anything in Christchurch, except earth quakes.... and they don't tend to effect oil consumption

Yes oil thats losing its lubricity properties can be a leading cause of increased fuel consumption.
Volvo have proven this, and it even extends to drivetrain oil,

In my old st191 corona i just used 15w40 diesel oil,

Severe operating conditions are
Most DD's.
in gear & driving as soon as the engine fires - like even before the warning light is off..
lots of cold starts, short trips & rarely getting hot enough so that your fingers can't stay in contact with the oil pan.
Starting with an empty filter.
Pushing dirt into the sump when replacing the drain plug.
no or low temp thermostat.
and are not racing.
