Coolant temperature

hey guys i was doing some data logging and i noticed my coolant temperature was reaching about 90 degrees c.

i am running a civic radiator. and a Tridon High flow Thermostat.

i was just wondering is this normal ? what is normal operating temp for a 4age turbo ?

also i was getting high air intake temp i thought anyway. what intake temp have other setup on here run at on a normal sunny clear day?

i was getting intake temp of 32 degrees c driving normally but at idle would go up to 36 degrees c

I see about 85degrees normally on an NA 20v. In traffic as high as 90 - though has been as high as 95 sitting in the pits at the track idling.

also where were you measuring the temp? and a steady 90*?

whats wrong with tridon?

i am measuring the temp on the thermostat housing where the standard sensor goes using standard sensor hooked up to megasquirt. and it went up to 90 when i was stopped at a light. when i would drive off it would go down to like 88 89.

Well known for being shite thermostats. Personally i've had 50% fail out of the box, (okay, thats only one failed and one okay) other have reported similar (search tridon on the forum). Now I buy genuine, since they are only a few $ more and never had a problem.

90* sitting at lights is nothing to worry about, not hot enough to turn the fans on. And megasquirt calibration might be a degree or two off.

90 degrees is very average, possibly even a fraction on the low side.

the hole reason i am asking bout this is because
The other day i was running no intake pipe from my turbo and when i was driving round i noticed much cooler coolant temps could my turbo intake pipe be sucking in hot air from engine bay making the motor generally hotter? . i will take intake off and take a data log to confirm this.

but i was thinking of making a cold air box for my turbo intake... i know there is a lot of controversies about this even mighty car mods did a thing.

i was wondering what you guys thought.

Preventing hot air from getting to your intake would seem like a wise idea for any car.
Used to see alot of "cold air boxes" that were a joke, as the pick up for the box was still somewhere relatively hot!

Unless general opinion has changed since I last bothered to read about this stuff. A cold air box with a generously sized cold air feed is a good idea. But you must make sure that it is sealed off from the hot air sources and that you've done your best to prevent the box from heat soaking.

If you can data log, then that'll provide you the best answer. Nothing beats first hand experience with good data.

Cold air intake on a turbo is basically a waste of time IMO

reviewing the data logs of both times running with intake pipe on and without,
my conclusion is that the results were the pretty much the same.

it just took longer for the car to warm up with no filter as there was more fresh air getting to turbo but once it got to it operating temp the air intake temps and the coolant temps were the same with or without the intake pipe
