Corolla Belta 05 pinking (oh, btw it's a CVT)

Postby apollo » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:23 pm

2005 Corolla Belta sedan 1300cc, 2SZ-FE, VVTi and CVT.

We just bought this car at 90,000km. It's imported, so no service history and to ensure the fluids are correct we're getting the transmission flushed and filled with "CVT Fluid Type TC", and the engine filled with 10/30.

We're not flash harrys anymore (I'm 64 and she's 72) and are obviously not looking for performance nor a status symbol. We wanted this model for fuel economy and assume that variable this-and-thats contribute to it, and that as long as we don't tow heavy vehicles and keep all the fluids clean the little oilways will not clog up and it might work as it should. Right?

The transmission controls are D, S and B (bottom) and I have some concerns about the engine pinking I hear coming at low revs. It's quite faint pinking (and I change to S or B to raise the revs) but wonder about it.

100kph in D, 2000 rpm, runs ok on the flat then with a slight load engine starts pinking.
Change to S, revs rise to 3000 rpm, and pinking's gone.

Am I right in guessing that pinking is going to be a 'feature' of this motor when it's running so slowly? It's been years since I've heard an engine pinking and then it was a more gutsy noise. This car does a slight tinkly-tinkle-tinkle with anything other than flat road, (50kph/1000rpm or 100kph/2000rpm). I'm wondered if the valve timing apparatus is operating at low revs to avoid pinking.

Or maybe the car's been running at low revs most of its life and now the carbon's built up around the plugs.

Does it sound like coke build-up? Should we ask the service people to check the plugs?

Any thoughts welcome.

Try running 95 and see if it makes a difference the 91 in nz is crap pretty sure there was another thread about this engine and it had issues with pinking due to running bad fuel
Why dream it when you can live it

If the engine is a 2NZ then it has a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Most engines close to or above 10:1 don't like 91. 95 is better. Plus it should improve your fuel economy further.

Mentioned in first post it's a 2SZFE, which is 11.0:1. So yes would definately benefit from higher octane!

Thanks everyone.
I note that the handbook only mentions "unleaded" fuel. I'll try 95 octane.

I'm sure I'll be corrected by one of the guys if i'm wrong but the rule of thumb i go by is:

NZ New: 91 octane unless otherwise specified
Jap Import: 95 octane unless otherwise specified
Anything with a turbo: 98 octane unless otherwise specified, 95 is ok if you cant find 98.

For that particular engine, both the vehicle data sheets I've found list 95 RON minimum, probably why you're getting detonation with 91. Change fuel and you should be sweet, plus you'll get a little more power out of it.

If it's bad i'd probably be going for 98 just for peace of mind. Not that much extra per tank.

Well, well! It needs 95 petrol.
Much appreciated advice.
I looked and found possibly the same data sheet RS13 found, at
http://vehicledatasheets.com/toyota/yaris_(06-)/1.3_p/0/2sz-fe/page-1

Now to drain the petrol...

How much is in it? If its half a tank maybe just fill it up with 98?

Not fun draining petrol...

Would it be an option to brim the tank as it is with 95 or 98, or add an octane booster to whats there, and just using it? as draining the tank sounds a little bit excessive haha, and if a single tank of 91 was going to destroy the engine, every single Blacktop 4A-GE in the country would have expired by now hahaha

I wouldn't even bother, just get it below half or what ever and fill it with 95/98.

Yeah, just use it until empty then top up. Draining petrol is a PITA and moderately dangerous.

Plus it's been running on 91 since you've owned it, a bit longer isn't going to make a difference.

You'd be better off just filling it with 98, it will still end up close enough to 98 and will be better than running it on crap fuel till it's empty.
