Whats my car worth?

Postby 1984FXGT » Mon Jan 27, 2014 8:56 am

Its a 1984 fxgt with the following:
A silvertop conversion running a blacktop ecu
C56 5 speed lsd
mrp race coilovers
Ae111 big brake upgrade

I need a valuation for insurance purposes and also for my own information. the insurance company valued it at $320 but that's because its done 408,000km. Any ideas?

500-1000 for the shell (or a factory one)
400-600 for the engine
200-400 for the gearbox
1200 for the coilovers
200-300 for brakes and then add say 400 for cert

Id say insure it for about the 3.5-4k mark

Ive exaggerated the value slightly

In the past I've always gone off what it would cost me to either buy the same spec car or what it would cost to rebuild

And then add about 15% just for my time or finding something as clean etc
Why dream it when you can live it

if they say its only worth $300 you'll want to be sure there is no mention of market value in your policy

As above, if its not an agreed value policy you are going to get what they want to give you*, and I'm not aware of any insurance company that will do agreed value on modified cars, and if there was I can guarantee that it'd have a silly excess and silly premiums too.

*And if it is an agreed value policy, read the fine print. they usually have clauses to get them out of paying more than market value.

Take it to a registered valuation place that specialises in classic/modified cars, talk to the insurance company and agree on a value. Although personally, I'd just get third party and be done with it. You don't want to spend a third of a car's value on insurance premiums every year, plus you'd have a fairly hefty excess so you'd get shafted anyway.

I'll buy it off you for $400!

Nah but seriously and car with WOF and reg is worth 1.5k plus. The days of 500 cars are over

Too true. Anything with reg and wof is worth gold it would seem, good cars get snapped up within minutes of going on TM!

It has a wof-rego and a cert plate. But insurance purposes that has to be a given.

The real question here is how much is it worth to you. If you don't mind paying half it's realistic value each year in premiums, by all means pick a number you would let it go for and carry on. Otherwise just 3rd party it.

End of the day it's a 30 year old Corolla with nearly half a million Kms on it. In their eyes, it's worthless. Some insurers will let you insure modifications separately if they are valued higher than a particular threshold. Could be an option.

They're probably not all that far off the mark in that estimate.

I'd think it'd be worth that if mint and original.
