2007 Hiace - problems?

Father inlaw is looking for a new work horse and is liking these vans.

They seem to have the 3L 1KD-FTV engine

Anything obvious I should be looking for? Are the engines alright reliability wise? First one he got me to look at had sand blast garnet throughout and surface rust in more places than I would have expected, so I told him to look at a bunch more and compare condition.

Keep up with oil changes, and more importantly with fuel filter changes. We only fit genuine and are doing them pretty much every 20k from memory. Injector washers when they're supposed to be done. EGR coolers blocking up is starting to happen a bit more often, though straight forward enough to get cleaned out.

I'll print that list, thanks. Will just emphasis the servicing side of things then. He already does that with his current ~400,000km hiace, so it should be easy enough.

Yeah, as much as people say the D4D engines are horrible it's a little bit overhyped. They're not fragile, but they don't take the 50,000km service intervals that the old 3Ls would put up with. The 3 or 4 taxis that we look after are doing airport runs down here. I think the 2009-10 one is on 400,000kms now. All have had EGR coolers blocking up making them gutless. Early ones needed taken off and soaked at engine reconditioners overnight to get them properly clean.

Run the right oil too, this was a lot of the issue with the early ones. And fuel additive couldn't hurt as the slightest bit of water in the fuel causes big problems. I think the fuel filters have had their micron rating revised 4 or 5 times to try and cut down the water problem. Sh*tty diesel we get over here.

Injector washers are a 45k service item, and its fatal if you don't!

We try and push fuel filter every service, always oem parts. Like Llyod says, the correct oil is very important also, from memory it will cause diesel particulate filter blockage/issues if wrong oil is used.
The other thing is to make sure the injectors are marked before removal, I read an article by AECS in the radiator mag where they were removed without marking, brought on checklamp. After recoding ecu, replacing ecu etc the lamp would not go out, caused all sorts of issues and huge downtime. Each injector is allocated to each cylinder, for what reason Im not sure.

This was a later SR5 hilux D4D from memory..

It's the same when replacing them. The injectors are coded to the ECU per cylinder. Something to do with each having a slightly different flow pattern/rate when they're manufactured and the ECU needs to know exactly how much they flow to keep fueling bang on.

^ that's pretty common on late model stuff, finding that on Isuzu's especially as work.

While I was at TMCA I never had any calls about hiace's funnily enough it was ALWAYS the Hilux only that we'd get problems with injectors and injector pumps which leads me to believe a large amount of the problem is caused by low quality fuel as hiace van's don't tend to crawl around the outback.

I don't think this would affect you but if it has a DPF system in the exhaust I've heard through various sources they are a pain in the arse on these. Again problem avoided if you follow basic service requirements as mentioned many times already in this thread.

Whilst still at Toyota it was discovered a lot of the "problems" was just people not knowing what a direct injection diesel sounds like. They have a distinct rattle, previous hilux owners misinterpreted that as a fault.

That's because in previous Hiluxs it was an indication that the flywheel was broken!

They do have a horrible sound to them though. Transits are just as bad.

just to emphasize what everyone else has said, these are not the hiace of the 90s. modern diesels need prompt, exhaustive and appropriate servicing. if its not going to a toyota dealer, find out what oil the servicing garage uses and make sure it meets the specs required. fuel system tolerances on high pressure diesel are minuscule and any work tends to end up being fairly expensive since alot of stuff is meant to be replaced if its removed.

we had one guy who put petrol in his diesel and ran it till it started to lose power - the bill was somewhere around 25k IIRC. obviously he'll have insurance but its major downtime too.

Sorry for the thread hijack but what are all the 2 litre petrol used import vans like? as they seem pretty cheap compared to the diesels. We had an 04 2.4litre petrol at my last workplace and that had plenty of torque but obviously thats a bigger motor .

ive driven a 2l and they are hopeless,, most are auto too so even worse expecialy if you have an weight in them, my work place have the 2.7l petrols and i have one aswell and they are wicked, lots of power, no major maintenance like the diesels or road user charges, pretty economic as well considering the size of motor they have, my 2c
