Cam cap bolts?

Postby cat007 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 5:03 pm

Whilst undoing my cam caps to change my valve springs, I managed to break one of the bolts when trying to undo it.

Which has made me wonder how stressed the others are, so I'd rather replace the whole lot.

Is it worth seeing if Toyota can get them, or should I get replacements from 'the bolt shop'?

Cheers

Find a motor at the wreckers
Remove the bolts
Clean, inspect, buy torque wrench, install bolts

Don't go to bolt shop -
Unlikely Toyota will be able to supply the bolts at a reasonable price.
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I'd be worried that they might have been stressed though....?

Why not go to bolt shop?

Inspect the shanks for cracking or stretching and the thread for stripping, if they look fine they probably are. If you're worried buy new ones.

Not sure what you mean by stressed though?

Well, the most shear load the bolt is ever going to see is when you're leaning on it when undoing it, tightening torque is considerably less and the tensile strength required would always be less than the design limit of the bolt. I'd say that if they didn't break coming out then they'll be fine going back in.

Thanks for that.
I was going to go tomorrow anyway and get a bonnet stay as mine are buggered and want the bonnet to be a lot more vertical!

Anyone else want me to pick up anything?

Ok so I haven't had a chance to get to pick-a-part or anything to get a cam cap bolt.

I don't suppose someone on the north shore would have one?

I won't have time between now and 8am Sat morning to get to a shop to buy one...
