Reflective Tape on the car

Okay. Might seem like a strange thing to want to do. But as I get older I get more "safety conscious". I bought some reflective tape for the old bicycle and I was thinking a couple of thin strips in a few strategic places on the car seemed like a good idea. I have a black car and I don't feel like replacing the wing mirror glass again.
(Fear not, it maybe be oldman noob like to want reflective tape, but the tape is black when viewed normally, so I won't look super stupid with yellow or orange stuff on the car!)

Is it legal?
I've seen security guard's cars with reflective stuff all over them, so I'm guessing there's no hard and fast rules.
If I just wanted to put a couple of "highlights" on the bumper and/or wingmirror is this okay?

It's pretty wide open as far as reflective tape goes, as it's a fairly passive device.

Use red on the back, and silver/white on the front.

*however* that said, I've never seen it look anything other than appallingly tacky on cars ... there's an Echo I see around the place with lots of tape on it, and I have to say, it just looks bloody awful!

Wear a reflective fluoro vest. Everyone will see you, and as a bonus they'll all slow down because they think you're a cop. Double safety!

Yep, I imagine that it can never look good. I was planning to try and keep the tack factor to low.
Hmmm.. the tapes I have are white and black, both shine back as white. Maybe I should just stick to putting a few strategic strips on the bike (night commuting can be a "fun" event)!

I'm a little lost as to how me wearing a reflective vest while I sit on my couch will help unobservant people notice my black car parked on the roadside. But points for thinking. I guess I could put a mannequin by the car at night....

Put a road cone on your back corner. Works for somebody else I know. Went from 2 insurance claims a year to no issues whatsoever...
