Alternative Supplier for 4AGE 20V valve shims...

Postby jondee86 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:13 am

Just while I think of it... does anyone have the dimensions of a 20V valve
shim, or have a shim lying round that they could measure ? Googling has
not produced anything helpful, and I would like to know...

1. Outside diameter
2. Inside diameter
3. Overall height

There is a company in Australia that makes shims, but they only seem to
list the shims by dimensions, not by application. And I'd like to see if the
shims they list are the correct size for the 20V.

Cheers... jondee86

The consensus is that the shims measure 5mmID x 8mmOD x approx 4.4mm
overall height (varies with shim thickness). Precision shims make these from
1.00mm to 5.0mm thick in increments of 0.02mm with most sizes available
off the shelf.

The price is AU$9.00 each (approx US$8.35 or Euro6.05)

International postage through Australia Post
Postage is either AU$25.00 no tracking no insurance 7 or so days away.
Or, AU$66.00 with tracking and insurance 3 days or so away.
Provide Visa number and expiry date for same day despatch.

Is that significantly cheaper than getting them from Mark?
Or is it just for getting custom sizes outside what toyota make? (presumably for oversize valves with shorter stems)

I've no idea how the price compares. Mainly I was posting this information
for the benefit of readers in countries where the 20V was not sold through
the Toyota dealer network, and parts are not supported. And of course, as
you say, there may be folks after custom shims, which they can get from
Precision. They also make 16V shims if you get stuck.

Pretty sure Mark is happy to drop shims into an envelope and send them anywhere in the world... well, maybe not Nigeria and the like.

The other thing is of course you never know what thickness shims you need, till you measure the ones you have in the motor, which is what made me wonder why you didn't just measure up the ones already in the motor when you first posted.

New 20V shims would be $21.70 each..... So would really depend on how many are required with that international postage

Yeah... it comes down to how many you need, and what country you happen
to be in at the time. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about 20 valves :D

You can slightly modify the standard shims too by rubbing them on som fine sandpaper to make them thinner,
wouldn't go too far though, a couple of sizes at most, and obviously need shims that are too big to start with not too small.

Have done that a few times with success.
Have also bought a couple of new shims through Toyota too,
but sometimes it's cheaper to buy a damaged ST head just for the shims,
done that too.

Or just use a magnetic surface grinder.
Thats how we do all the shims at my dads work. We can safely take them down quite a few sizes with no issues and they are 100% flat.
