Anybody got a good source for connectors?

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Wed Apr 30, 2014 8:55 pm

Looking into all the bits i'll need to make up a loom for Link G4 going into the MR2, and found tweaked performance which appears to have all the connectors I want, but by the time you add pins and seals at US$1 each the prices are getting pretty steep. Just wondering if anyone has a better source for Toyota connectors (mostly Sumitomo stuff I believe).

Would prefer not to have to cut and splice from old looms, but might resort to that if I cant find connectors at reasonable prices.

Never checked tbh, may be a possibility though?

Richard has a few odds & ends, especially since he's been doing stuff for the 86 series, but I asked him about it when I was doing my loom and he couldn't really help. I would love to know who supplies tweaked performance because as you say, $1 a pin adds up to heaps if you're doing a full loom and I bet their buy price is of the order of 5c/pin

The ECU connectors appear to be AMP Multilock and are available at mouser and digikey, still trying to sort out exactly which pins are the correct mating pins are, but one candidate is 11c each.. in 1000 qty, or 23c each in 100 qty for an idea of pricing.

So it appears mouser has the ECU plugs for gen2 and 3 3sgte ECUs and according to http://www.autosoftsys.com/supra/ecuext/ the same plugs fit a whole bunch of japanese ECUs from the late 80s/early 90s.
Also found the 3sgte TPS connector (same as some 1/2JZ I believe).

Prices at mouser are about a third of the prices at tweaked, and shipping is only $30 or so.

I'm not 100% these are the exact right part, but they sure look about right, i'll have to pull the loom out of storage and check if they have AMP molded into the connectors somewhere over the weekend.

AMP Multilock 040/070 Hybrid connectors for the ECU
22 pin (16sml+6lrg) ECU plug housing 174515-6
26 pin (16+10) ECU plug housing 174516-6
16 pin ECU plug housing 174514-6
Large ECU receptacles (pins) 173630-1 or 173631
Small ECU receptacle (pins) 173716-1 or 175094

AMP Sealed Sensor Connector for the TPS
TPS connector housing 184046-1
TPS connector receptacles (pins) 184095-2

A lot of the other connectors look like they are Sumitomo, and Mouser doesn't seem to stock them (apparently Sumitomo MOQ= 10,000 on any part), Tweaked and ChaseBays both stock them, and ChaseBays is half the price of tweaked from the quick check on prices i've done. They both also do the ECU connectors (listed as Honda OBD1 connectors on chaseBays), so i'm guessing the extra shipping charges from splitting the order means just buying everything from ChaseBays will work out about the same price.

For some of the connectors I may resort to soldering leads to the pins then potting the connectors and fitting a weatherpack or DTM plug instead. I've found a post that suggests this is the best thing to do for the toyota COPs as the connectors have a habit of losing tension due to heat/vibration in racing applications, and if i have the potting compound handy a few more connectors is no drama.

Good find. Don't Mouser do free shipping if you spend over $100 or something?
