Wiring Mismatch in SW20 - JVC h/unit

Postby Ismart120 » Thu May 08, 2014 8:47 pm

Hi

I've got an SW20 Mr2 with a jvc kd 626 head unit going to 6'' speakers in the doors and stock tweeters. Don't have any rear speakers afaik.

The head unit has come up with a 'wiring mismatch' error and attempts to reset the unit have no effect. I've opened up both doors and the back of the head unit (chocolate boxed...) to check the connections there but to no avail; nothing out of place and no change when I jiggled and tightened everything up.

So looking at a damaged wire somewhere else - what are the 'hot spots' I should be aware of? Any tricks to opening up space and rewiring one or both doors if it comes to that? (I don't want to do that if I can avoid it)

Failing that, anyone had a similar problem with this headunit?

Thanks

So you're 100% sure all the wires are matched from the car to the head unit correctly? Perhaps disconnect the speakers and see if it still errors.

There is probably a broken speaker wire somewhere in the door which is causing it to short out

Oh and by speakers, I meant their wiring at the head unit.

Ah, should have stated that its been going for over a year before this happened, so are all connected right.

Yeah, now it just becomes a mission of which wire/s. But, in the door itself? Or on the hinge?

Check the loom where it comes out of the bottom of the A pillar and goes into the door. It is usually in a rubber boot. The wires in there break as after 20+ years of opening and closing the door the wires get brittle and break.

This should help out a bit - is LHD based but the basics are the same. Is SW20 based too. This is probably quite extreme way of doing it, but if you disconnect the speaker and its fixed, this is what I would be looking at.

Disconnect and reconnect wires until the error goes away. Chocolate block makes it pretty easy to work out which wire it is. Then replace the wire, don't bother trying to find the fault location on the wire, as you'll just need to replace it anyway. If you can trace it to one speaker, pull the speaker out and check for problems. Could just be earthing out on something.

Ah, forgot to reply and say thanks for all the help.

Yep, turned out to be wire earthing in the passenger door - the rear speaker one, of which none are connected so I just disconnected it and taped it over. Seems to be working well so far
