What motor and box?

Postby FST4RD » Thu Jun 19, 2014 9:50 am

Basically I have a blank slate. My Mitsi Starion doesn't have a motor or box at the moment, but I'm looking to change that.
This is going to be a track car only. Motor and box must be reliable, not looking at huge hp, just enough to have some fun.
I do have a sohc 4g63t and Starion box in the other car which I could use, but not powerful enough and Starion boxs aren't the best. I could do the dohc conversion and put an rx7 savanna box behind it. But I was thinking bigger perhaps.
I want to budget for around $3k for motor, box, loom etc not including install costs. The car used to have a 302 v8 in it, but that with the custom mounts are long gone.
I think a turbo 1jz/2jz is probably over budget. Another 302 and 5 speed? 1uz? Sr20det?
What are people's thoughts?

I can get custom mounts out of the state's to drop a 1jz/2jz straight in for under $400nzd landed, but still think a decent motor, box, loom and ecu will be too much.

Not very original but why not just go for an evo 4g63?

Well I can put the evo or vr4 head on mine, there is a mazda bell housing that allows you to fit a rx7 savanna box, which are good boxs.
But was thinking if it was cheap enough to say get a 1uz, manual box wouldn't this be a better option for the track?

Depends on how much power your after I guess. You'll end up spending quite a bit buying a 1uz, bellhousing, box, flywheel, clutch and ecu, and while it will sound cool you wont make oodles of power without opening the engine or adding turbo etc. Where as a dirty old 4g63 you can just wind more boost in or fit a bigger turbo. Tried and true I guess and relatively easy to squeeze power out of them. 1j/2j would be awesome but still quite spendy

I would ideally love a 2jz non turbo, itb, cams, headers etc something that sounds crazy and revs close to 10k with a r154 behind it. But that would be a little out of the price range :(

4G63 sounds like a good idea. I know nothing about them but they sound great and RWD in a Starion would be great to see.

There is a box from a 2wd syangyong (eww) ute which fits to the back of a 4g63. Wreckers have oodles of them from written off pieces or crap so are cheap as chips. also strong as buggary from being in a ute

Think they are a merc box originally - all I know is lampola make a dog kit for them. know a guy is putting on behind his Ex lancer he's building for Silverfern Rally.

Do you think you could find out what motor/model they came from?

Mazda FE with a hair dryer bolted on the side?

Went for a ride in a KE70 drift car with this engine swap. $200 wrecker motor seemed to go well, 300hp at the wheels iirc.

I'll just put this here..

However with $3k, I'd suggest an RB25DET. You could get a complete front cut for not much more than $3K. Bigger turbo, fuel pump, injectors and a tune and you'd have a solid 350-400hp.
