I presume your friend is wanting to build one? Here are the basics you'll need to do from my experience with rallying and ae series cars..

- roll cage: get a rollcage builder to weld it and homologate. Use mild steel not chromoly. Will want to go for double crosses in the rear and double crosses on doors as well as taking the cage through to the front struts as they are weak in the firewall area and can flex.

- underbody protection: use marine grade ali as it won't wear like normal ali but is still strong. Use at least 5 or 6 mm thick. Ensure the engine and gearbox are well covered as well as making sure water splashes can't get into electrics or intake.
Best to put underbody guards on the floor pan also or it will get massively beaten up and end up rusting. Use mudflap material or rubber hosing to protect the rear suspension arms or you won't be able to adjust them due to stone damage.
You'll also need some good stone guards. Standard ones are shit. Get laser cut plate and bolt behind hub flange with scrapers to chuck stone out.

- Suspension: use a bilstein inverted insert. A kyb will always overheat and leak out it's gas. I used to blow a shock on the aw11 every time I took it out got frustrating changing them. Autolign can build these for you. Want to use a slightly up rates spring but keep it nice and high. Either do some spring comparisons at a wreckers to find something that will fit and be a bit heavier or using a low kingspring also works well most times.

I just sold my ae92 Rally car, I used a giant sheet of polypropylene sheeting for the under body protection, You can but it from a sign writing place, 5mm think, lasted numerous rallies and was hardly worn. Had a 6mm Standard Alloy sump Guard which was attached by two tabs welded onto the subframe that it slotted backwards into then was held by the 2 bolts that are factory on the crossmember and hold the little bulb part on.

I had factory height stiffer Dobisport springs which raised the car a bit and just used kyb off the shelf repco/supercheap shocks as it was cheap (had to replace them pretty much after every 1 to 3 rallies depending on how rough it was. A friend of mine had Bilstien P50 inserts with some sort of modified Hyundai rear shock mounts in his AE92 and it handled brilliantly (Was engineered my Macbuilt engineering in Wellington)

My cage had bars for africa, Didnt go through to the front struts and never seemed to have any issues with firewall flex? Kept the dash support bar under there, I Had dual side intrusion but not crosses, Had 1 bar running along the sill and another one started from half way up the door and ran on the angle down to ankle sort of height on the A pillar bar.

My cage was built my Octane Automotive in Palmerston North, I would seriously suggest if you can get it to him let him build it, One of the best cage builders around IMO.

Probably lots more but I cant think off the top of my head now. Oh and the little corollas are very oversteery, which can be alot of fun on gravel haha
