coolant lines to turbo.. how big?

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Sat Jul 05, 2014 6:31 pm

Just wondering what peoples logic is on sizing of coolant lines to the CHRA is. Kinugawa kit came with some tiny little coolant lines; looked to be about -3 from what i remember, wondering if stepping them up to a -4 or a -6 would be a better idea just to keep the core a bit cooler on track, and help prevent coking after track sessions.

I normally use 1/4" / 6mm hose for coolant lines, not sure what that relates to -wise

-4 is the same as 1/4"?

Just go for lines that flow more than your fittings as they're going to be the restriction anyway.

And also, make sure to get them long enough so that you can rotate the CHRA to take advantage of thermal siphoning.

I see so many water cooled turbos with the CHRA clocked so the oil lines are at 12 and 6 oclock, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Yeah, that i s one thing that I was aware of, but the turbo doesn't seem to be setup to maximize it. The CHRA appears to have four ports that could be used for cooling, but the way it is setup doesn't seem to be optimal. It has the open ports at the top on both back and front, and the lower ports blocked off on both sides. It looks like it could easily have one moved to the bottom port so cold coolant flowed into the bottom of the turbo, was heated and rose to flow out the top on the other side (or even the same side). In my case siphon flow direction is going to be opposite to the flow when the engine is running simply due to the location of the water pipes.

That's how the oil lines should be to allow the oil to drain out without the use of a scavenger pump?

You are right, regarding optimum oil drainage, but its amazing what clocking them 10 deg will do for thermal siphoning, while not adversely affecting the oil draining sufficiently :)
