Oil recycling/safe disposal

Postby GDII » Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:42 pm

Where do people take their used engine oil to be safely disposed of in the Wellington area during the weekend. I know Wellington landfill take it but when I called the guy said only during the week even though it's open during the weekend, not helpful.

Don't repco and supercheap take used oil? Or is that only north of the bombay hills?

Ask a local workshop, most wouldn't mind if you didn't have a large amount to throw it in their tank.

I have heard of one at a Marina close by but not sure of the tanks exact location.

I'm also not sure what to do with the empty containers if I have to pour it in.

I have about 26 litres I've been hoarding for 6 years plus a whole lot of empty containers because my car burns a lot of it.

Just fill your boot with the bottles and drive around local garages asking to put it in their tanks. Most say yes :)

I recall one of the gas stations in Porirua having a waste oil tank, BP I think.

Supercheap here have a tank as well. Or as mentioned, ask any garage

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will pick one and see how much I can get rid of.

What to do with empty containers with oil reminants in it? Can't just throw that on the landfill.

The tip at Porirua has a waste oil dump too but its only free for the first so many litres (not that they have cared in the past when ive rocked up with half a dozen 5L bottles). I just take the bottles home for future waste oil use. Theyre 7 days.

It does only mention the oil thing under trade use, so maybe they dont care how much a private user is dumping?

It's only 'free' if you pay for getting into the tip with other rubbish so I'm not going there again.

That's what I did but the guy seemed very grumpy and told me it was only free with paid rubbish. He let me through but wasn't happy about it. Doesn't help when you turn up in an empty looking MR2 where most people don't think it has a boot.

I'm heading up past silverstream in the weekend so I'll just take it there.
