Leaking Diesel Pump 2c Corona

Failed a wof due to diesel leaking onto exshust.

Mechanic said it was from one of the seals around the back and it would have to be removed and seals replaced by a turbo and diesel specialist. Was quoted $620 by the turbo and diesel guy for all new seals and $200 for labour for the mechanic to taking out and fit it again. I have a 1990 fwd corona with the 2c motor, 280k on the clock. If there was a cheaper alternative to this I'm all ears!

On trade me there are a few option that I have seen;

for $595 I could swap my diesel injector pump with a overhauled pump. New seals, inspected. (is that better than just getting mine re sealed)

The other option is to buy a second hand pump that hasn't been inspected, but is $300. I'm aware that it could be as poked as mine is already. I don't want to throw huge amounts of money at the car as I'm wanting to swap the motor out within the 18months (slash when I have enough money) so Im trying to do the minimum so that I can just keep it on the road, as aposied to fitting all new parts and trying get another 100k on the clock.
This second hand pump is from a 2c lite ace van with 110,00kms. Will the the pump fit from a rwd mounted 2c to my fwd 2c? And is there anyone in the hamilton/ cambridge region who could swap it out for less than $200?

Get one that's been fixed up. You'll be cursing when the unknown second hand one starts leaking.
You might find it's got a bit more pep too which won't go amiss in anything C powered

Turns out that the reconditioned pump is from a lite ace, will this work on my corona?

Get the chassis number of the vehicle it's from and check it against the part number from yours on Toyodiy.

The pump should have numbers on, make sure they match a replacement. Recon pump would be your best bet. If it's stripped and found that shafts/housing etc are worn then the price could balloon and leave you with a car off the road until you find the right pump.

How bad is it leaking? If it's just a throttle seal or similar then you can sometimes do them in place and just give it a good drowning in brake cleaner and it's as good as gold. Likewise if it's a fairly slow leak that has accumulated over time then a decent clean can be enough. Get it clean first to see where the leak is from and how bad it is. Some workshops are a lot pickier on that stuff than others.

I have got a 2L (Hiace motor, not 2 litre) pump rebuilt about ~5 years ago (it leaked 2 month later since new diesel was introduced), and it cost me $580 for a full rebuild. I removed and installed pump myself. It is pretty much a cambelt job.
If you are going to rebuild it you will need to set timing (or at least mark it the way it was).

$595 another unit overhauled, which you're not 100% will fit.

I know which option i'd be going for, especially if you're paying the mechanic in either scenario.

Could always buy a cheap scooter to plod around on until you can afford engine swap. Might do that for the same money, and could resell it later. Not that i'd scooter around, people can't drive.

Wow - $600 is a 3rd the value of the car?

Seems pretty steep.
Bet you could buy a whole second hand engine for that. But then I guess you won't know the condition of that pump too...

There must be a cheaper option than spending $600!

Definitely attempt Lloyd's cleaning advice before proceeding to waste $. Figure out a way to limp it until you have the $ for the swap?

Alternatively realise its a pipe dream, sell/scrap, work, earn $, start again.

a 2nd hand engine will probably be less pump.

Clean it up and ID exactly where it's leaking from. Depending on the pump they can be easy to fix. The mechanics automatic reply is "rebuild the pump" but you may not need to.
You may finds it's just 2 bolts and an oring.

Thanks for the advise guys. Been told by the wof guys it's leaking from the block side seals so can't replace them without removing the pump. Think I have to bite the bullet and get my pump pulled out and all seals replaced. Yay...$$$
