I got close to 100,000 kms & 10 years running out of my modified MR2 GT before its engine rebuild at 206,000 kms (not related to oil filter failure)

That was using good old Ryco filters form day one and changing every 10,000 kms or 6 months.

Realistically, as long as you service the car regularly, it shouldn't matter what type of filter you use. If you use a cheap one, just change it more regularly, simple.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

I agree 100% on your statement.
Look i started the thread just to show that something has changed to the usual filter(japan) I'm getting at my local dealer and if possible get some info on its availability etc. Now thats changed its time to move on... also I'm not against chinese stuff as some of you might have implied, it just happened that the filter i picked up was from china.

Definitely good to know, in a nut shell its not really worth spending extra to buy TGP oil filters anymore.

Why do people get hung up on this sort of stuff? Vehicles can happy do 500,000kms on cheap aftermarket filters and never have an issue with the oil system, even running 10,000km intervals or more. Soooo much automotive stuff (even genuine) comes out of China.

Because of the difference in perspectives.

Company's perspective - cost/benefit analysis based on the probability of failure. As you suggest, most customers will not notice the difference/ vehicle will be sold by the time the problem eventuates. Lower production price, charge same price, increase profit. Pay out claims if able to be proved on those caused by shite filters. Small number of expensive claims is a piss in the pond compared to the overall profit.

Enthusiasts perspective - One catastrophic filter failure = large impact on ability to use a vehicle. Less emphasis on cost, increased emphasis on benefit. Hence unlike the masses, happy to pay more for better quality.

People get hung up on it because there is no efficient way for quality to be signaled... i.e. how do you actually know the same production techniques are applied in China? Faith in Toyota as a brand vs assumed knowledge of production quality from China? Bit of a risk considering the result if its wrong.......... Thats why people get hung up on this 'stuff'

I am sorry for resurrecting old thread.

My brother in law bought two genuine filters (one 20003 and another 10003), Thai made, and both were leaking. So there is quality issue there.

The question is Ryco a good alternative (where it is made)?
Is there a japanese made filter brand on the market, what is it?

HKS, which is probably just a rebranded Denso, is Japanese made. $40 for an oil filter though :o

Keen to see photos of the fault with the filter, if possible? What failed exactly?

Sorry no photo, as it was brought up in BTW conversation. It looks like it was leaking from seal (but possibly from seam).
He also asked his mate, who works at local Toyota dealership, about the leak and his mate told him that it is very common.

BTW I cut open the 30002 filter (late 5L diesel) and it had 2 filter cartridges in inside, paper type and sponge type, as I was wandering why it costs so much ($42).
Once I will run out of the Japanese made 30002, I will cut open a Thai made one to see if it still has the two media types, if it doesn't will switch to after market, as there is no reason why pay premium for TGP if it is the same quality.

i seem to recall an issue with TGP and ryco both leaking from seams a few years back - maybe he got an older filter?

you'd like to think stock still on shelves in the affected range would have been recalled though...
