Work ute was nearly written off buy an uninsured driver a couple of years back. Last I heard they had bailed on their rental and left town to avoid being bankrupted. At least you would have a house to sell and hopefully some equity to cash in to avoid that

Not to day but lifted the turbo off and started removing striped studs. Not an easy task with one arm. Think Ill go buy a extractor set to help remove this last one, unless someone wants to lend one....

You don't have any real leverage with the insurance company, they will either repair it to what they think it needs or offer you a cash settlement. If you don't like what they offer then you would have to take it through the disputes tribunal and prove your loss is greater than what they offered. The only slight advantage you have is that it will be the other driver you have to take to court which will piss him off a lot when he would expect his insurance to handle it all for him. Not having your own insurance is likely to count against you in the disputes tribunal.
If I was trying to pressure them the first thing I would do is demand a replacement vehicle while you await assessment. It is a cost you could legitimately claim if you can show you have been disadvantaged by not having a vehicle. Most policies don't automatically provide this but you aren't the policy holder and are claiming for the loss caused to you by the other driver so you might get lucky.

I paid $7.29 a month to third party insure my old daily.. less than $2 a week. I have a mate with a similar outlook to you, he's still drip feeding the insurance company of a taxi he rear ended not that long ago, far more than what third party would cost him. Still not insured, he tells me it costs too much while he smokes like a train and chops a few woodies every night in front of his 55" flatscreen.. the stupidity is infuriating.

Well thankfully the only similarity between him and I is the 55" television, except mines not on the tick like his. I've just heard so many heartache stories of having insurance and it being a con. I have considered insurance, I think it was the pre 25 pricing that put me off but now at the ripe old age of (almost) 27 I could consider 3rd party. Maybe I'll ask the AA when they finally get around to having a look at my poor car. I'm going to Aus on the 10th, they'll probably ring on the 11th.

You'd be silly not to mate. Especially if you've got a car that can be reshelled cheaply or an expendable $1000 daily, third party is absolutely worth it. I've heard a few bad stories as well but invariably there always seems to be an element of assumption regarding vehicle value and obligations with insurance.. be straight up with them, keep you and your car legal and you won't have an issue when it comes time to claim. The couple of times I've needed it I've been super glad that I had it!
