Dead c60 gearbox test?

Postby dub » Fri Apr 10, 2015 12:20 pm

Dumb question time.

Is there an easy way to check the basic operation of a c60 gearbox out of the car? Couldn't get into gear after clutch pressure plate deaggregated, mechanic thinks there might have been a loose spring jamming it but needs to either fit back in the car to test or send to specialist.

You can check it by moving the selector arms, I go though the gears after a rebuild to check that everything is good , sometimes you need to turn the gearbox shafts a bit to get the gears to select , but it should be possible to get all gears.

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

In my experience, the things that die first is actually the selector arms (and related bits) and then bearings, if you can't change gears, it'll be a rebuild job.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Box back in and working but feels very different, a lot shorter throw and more force required to select gear. Could be the short shift kit is now working properly or new heavy duty clutch (shot Bazda) affecting gear lever feel?

Fearing the worst, anywhere in Auckland recommended for rebuild?

Clutch will not have any effect on the gear change feel (unless extreme examples where the clutch plate is very heavy, as in weight, and synchros have hard time to spin it up/down).

Or if the clutch is not releasing fully that will also overwork the syncros.

Try putting it in first gear, handbrake off on flat ground, press clutch in and rev the engine to redline. if the car tries to move at all the clutch is dragging and you need to sort that.

Assumption was that the clutch was working OK.
