Tuners In Wellington

Post by dvssky »

Hi Everyone.

Who would be best at tuning an aftermarket ECU
(EMS Stinger) on a 2JZ-GTE in the Wellington
Region - Not interested in speedtech.

Has anyone any experience with Troys Mechanical in Paraparaumu ?
http://www.troysmechanical.co.nz/

I've done some research via google and not found anything bad about them ,
but first hand experience is always best.

Also who would be best when it comes to working on said engine for performance in Wellington ?

I'm thinking after next ECU tune I'll be looking at head and cam work.
Really want to find someone here that knows and loves these engines and can get the best out
of them whilst keeping it reliable.

Thanks :)

Shred is probably the only other recognized Tuning crowd in Wgtn.

Why are you not interested in STM??

Andre tuned my F-Con V-Pro in my Supra and hasn't missed a beat in 7 years.

Shred is gone now ( dyno is still at the same workshop but is now private as far as I know) and Andre has left STM as of last week. Although I would like to know why your not keen on STM also?

STM had farewell drinks for Andre on friday as that was his last day of ownership so new owner now .

The former shred dyno can be hired with your tuner or I believe Josh who worked for shred can do tunning on it , best to talk to Geoff at NZ wiring about hiring it etc.

"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

Andre has trusted Chris Wall to do the tuning at STM for three years apparently, and i'd never been told that Andre had handed over the tuning to Chris, so I doubt their is much dissatisfaction out there. Chris tuned my (boundary pushing) JZ engined car last year, and his communication and 'can do' attitude was impressive.

Can you give us a list of mods you've done to the motor? turbo? fuel system? how much power are you after?

The list is long but It's got all external mods for over 400wkws, if I want more I'll upgrade turbo and probably do head work.
That (current set up) will keep me happy for a while though..
It's getting some work done for a cert at present then tune will be taking place.

I investigated some more and am happy thus far who I've chosen to work on my car.. Very professional
and no trying to onsell you stuff that you don't need , so honest..

Will update once car is tuned, for those that are interested.

Cheers

The closest I've had to do with them is hiring their dyno once for a tune quite a while ago, Troy seemed like a good sort, open minded and pretty knowledgeable. The only negative thing I have heard about them was from someone who asked if I could tune their car as they weren't happy with how things went with Troy and wanted someone else to finish the tune. On quizzing the situation further it seems more to me like Troy gave them some truth on their setup and it wasn't what they wanted to hear... so I politely declined to get involved.

There are a lot of cowboys in NZ, don't assume that someone charging or telling you to do more are just trying to make you part with your money - there are a LOT of people I know of who have gone with the cheaper option citing that with a reason and have ended up spending way more when they've had to go back and re-address the things they probably should have done the first time through. Not saying the cheaper option will always be the case, but while on one side there are people out there who will up-sell you on stuff you don't need... there are easily as many people who will tell you want you want to hear to get you past the point of no return with you, so hope your research has been solid.

Who did you choose? Not to discuss, you've clearly already chosen - it will just be interesting to know and see how they go with it
