GT-Four RC turbo problem?

Postby tga_gtfourrc » Thu May 14, 2015 8:46 am

Hey,

I have a 1991 Celica GT-Four RC and have this issue with the turbo. I don’t know a lot about cars but I will try explain this the best I can.

I’ll be driving along and the turbo will start to spool up and deliver boost at low RPM, up to about 6PSI, then as I accelerate further it will suddenly die off and the engine revs and no power is delivered from the turbo. I don’t see any blue or white smoke and the car drives normal without use of the turbo.

Any ideas as to what the issue might be?

Cheers,

Do you have a slipping clutch? Do the engine revs rise without the speed rising, then when you take your foot off the gas the tacho drops suddenly without the car slowing down?

Hey mate,

Nah the clutch doesn't slip. Yes the engine revs rise without the speed increasing, and I'm pretty sure the tacho drops suddenly without the car slowing. I'll test on the way home to confirm.

Thanks,

The clutch is slipping if the rev are rising without speed increasing like you say. New clutch time.

That is the description of a slipping clutch. It has a 3sgte and a heavy gearbox..not going to be a fun job to replace the clutch I imagine.

Bugger :(

Cheers guys that makes sense now. Though it doesn't always happen, is it a gradual thing that will get worse in time? I'll start looking at my options for a new clutch anyhow.

Thanks,

The clutch disc wears out over time. It will get worse and eventually you won't be able to drive the car.
Does the boost increase past 6psi?

Driving it for too long with a slipping clutch can wreck your flywheel too, so don't leave it too long

Send your clutch, plate and flywheel to Autoclutch in Auckland $500ish to get the whole lot rebuilt and upgraded, much cheaper then a new OEM or buying an Exedy HD.

Dont forget a new release bearing as well. Autoclutch should be able to supply for $60-80

Get an OEM release bearing from Toyota. Aftermarket ones don't tend to last very long. Wouldn't want to have to pull the gearbox off again to change this small item.

Why would you bother rebuilding tired pressure plate and clutch plate when you can get new one for same money?
