Bolt in roll cage
I have had a bit of a look through the Motorsport manual but didn't find the answer, what I want to know is can I use a bolt in half cage for club sport events? And secondly if I can, can I mount harness's to it?
Thanks
Dan

I am not sure on the 1/2 cage stuff, and what you can run where from the top of my head,
but I take it that you know that a bolt in cage must be bolted to foot plates that must be welded into the car,
so even a bolt in cage needs the same area footplates welded in as a standard cage.

Re: Bolt in roll cage
How would GT2 Porsches get around this? Their cage looks like it just bolts into the bodywork?
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Pretty sure they wont, just looks like it.
When I got a car approved with a bolt in cage,
you had a plate say 100mm x 100mm that was the foot of the cage,
you also had another plate the same size 100mm x 100mm that was welded to the car.
When you place them on top of each other and bolt them up it looks like the cage is just bolted to the floor,
but it is not.
There is also the possibility that the one that is welded to the car is welded under the car, and the cage is bolted to the top,
so the car panel is sandwiched in the middle.
That was a few years ago, but I can't imagine they have removed the need for the extra welded in plate.

Re: Bolt in roll cage
Yes I'm aware I need to weld a plate to the floor to bolt it to. Just looking into options in regards to added safety and something to attach my harness to

Re: Bolt in roll cage
Does the bolt in cage have a bar between the rear stays? or is it an option to add one?
Re: Bolt in roll cage
It has the main hoop, with two rear stays and a diaganol bar from hoop to bottom of one rear stay with optional harness bar. All bars bolt together.

Can't be used in competition.
Non approved joints.
The ad is bastardly written ... as it implies it is useful as it says Motorsport approved tube.
What it doesn't say, is "Scrutineer will wee himself laughing if you turn up with one of those".

Haha awesome Leon, I had a feeling this could be the case. Think I will just stop being tight a get a proper cage.

Re: Bolt in roll cage
Not entirely accurate Leon. My rally car has a bolt in cage which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence..
There is a design guideline for bolt in cages somewhere (don't ask me where sorry) but generally it's so much more work it's just not worth it.
Bolt in cage would have to be specifically built and designed to the regs so you can prove the wall thickness, bend deflection etc etc.
Edit: Hah just saw TM ad.. Bit of a play on words there with being made from roll cage tube not approved design.
