4AGE being a dick

Postby AE86less » Tue Jun 09, 2015 10:52 am

I'm 100% certain that this will have been covered before, but buggered if I can find it. I know there's heaps of information on Google too, but I'm trying to resolve this on a "Student with a mortgage" budget, which means I don't have any money to "try" things if it can be avoided.

Basically, AE85 with smallport 4AGE running factory ECU and sensors etc. Wired in by Toyspeed's very own XS1V (i.e a very good job). Car has exhaust and intake mods but nothing too serious.

Went in for cert and failed on the brake check because the certifier couldn't get it up to 100km/h any more, he said that it had leaned out really bad. This manifests as the engine cutting out under throttle, once it's warm, it isn't an issue when cold.

Other relevant information:

Throttle is very on/off - there is no lightly riding the throttle to maintain 50km/h, it's like at least 1/4 throttle or nothing.

Fuel Pump screams - Factory AE85 tank with external Walbro pump and factory fuel lines. Is ok for a few minutes of driving then starts getting loud. I'm not sure if this is because of a poor return or a poor pickup.

Essentially, I am after advice/ a series of things to check, from free to expensive

My current ideas include:

Blowing out the fuel lines with compressor
Dropping fuel tank to check for crap again

...?

I'm really not sure where to start with checking electrics, I have an idea that the O2 sensor may be involved but don't know how to test it etc. Advice appreciated!

I'd start by pulling the fuel pump off and bench testing it, sounds like it is dying, if you have no pre-filter its probably full of shit.

Thanks for the reply.

The pump is brand new (has done about 45 minutes of driving), I bought another one because the bosch that was in there sounded like it was dying (made the same noise) :?

It does have an inline filter before the pump, but after sitting for 5 years since I cleaned the tank out it or the pickup sock thing may well be full of rust/crap.

What fuel pressure reg is it running? I'd be checking the base pressure on the rail and going from there.

same.

If it still has the factory non adjustable reg you can usually just pull the return line off and flow it into a container,
as if you are getting decent flow out the return the pressure is probably ok.
If not you will need to get a gauge onto it to measure the pressure.

A faulty O2 sensor shouldn't stop it from reaching 100Kmh.

Could the tank breather be blocked, causing a vacuum inside the tank?

Another possibility!

Look at me, just mining the toyspeed gold. I won't be able to test these until next weekend after my last exam.
