Toyota Blade Reverse Cam Issues

Post by ptrain »

Hi all,

I've just bought my first Toyota, a Blade! It's an awesome car but has one small problem. The reverse camera ain't working. Not a dicky bird when reverse is engaged.
It's still in its 90day warranty but my dealer is saying they can't fix it because the electrics in the Blade are so complex...

Now they claim to have tried a new head unit and a new camera unit to no avail. As I haven't worked on a Toyota yet, is this not pretty simple? Cam connects to reverse light for power and then straight to the head unit? So is it not just Check the connection to the reverse light for power and the signal cables for continuity? They are telling me 2 auto electricians have looked at it..

Any advice on how to deal with the dealer here would be great too! Never bought a car with a warranty before! They are looking for a solution at the moment.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

So is it a factory headunit and camera setup? The cameras themselves are usually pretty basic, as you say a power feed and a signal. Should be pretty easy to bench test to eliminate the units themselves.

If they can't fix it tell them to sublet it to someone who can or to give you a new car with a working camera. Their incompetence is not your problem.

Is this a Toyota dealer and is the warranty through Toyota? I'd be talking to a dealer principal at this point. "We can't fix it because its hard" is rubbish.

Only other thing would be the reverse switch, which it may not even have given it's all computer run these days.

Nothing helpful to add really, nice car choice though 8)

Yes its a factory installed unit. I might try and get them to let me sit on their 'electricians' shoulder so I can see what hes actually doing. Like you say maybe it is all done by computers these days!! I would have thought that in this situation that if the switch had failed the reverse lights would have some kind of problem too but they appear to be fine.

Not likely the problem then. Good luck sorting it though!

The camera will be powered from the head unit with a low voltage feed, not 12V,

and the reverse signal goes to the head unit not the camera on most factory toyota systems.

Does the screen even try to change to camera mode when you go to reverse?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your response! No reaction from the unit at all when it's put in reverse.
They've had a look again but didn't get anywhere. Bringing it to a specialist who says he'll replace the camera and put in an English speaking head unit... Dealer wants me to pay half seems like a bargain really. Then again it's supposed to be under warranty....

Just be cautious with what they fit as there is a lot of double din junk out there that is slow and shitty,
not just with the camera, but with use in general.

Also check to see if you will loose any steering wheel controls etc if it has them,

as to put in a decent double din, replace the camera ( and possibly have to run new wires,) and make the steering wheel buttons all work again,
may not be a easy job, and your 1/2 may be a reasonable amount of money.

Pay half? If it has any other fault while under warranty will you pay half as well? I wouldn't settle for that and I'd only want a factory unit as a replacement.

Parents have a 2014 IS250 and it's camera and reversing sensors are starting to play up. Not sure what the local dealer is doing to resolve it but my guess is its all similar tech? If I find out anything useful I'll let you know. Otherwise unhelpful post is unhelpful.

I got a quote for a replacement from Toyota 1900 for camera and stereo + labour + gst.....

The dealer I bought the car off nearly died haha.

The way they are arguing it is that the problems in the wiring somewhere so why should they pick up the tab for new parts that arnt broken. I was going to change stereo anyway which would have cost the bones of 400ish anyway.

If they can't fix it because it is too complex then they shouldn't have sold it. Make them pay for the full amount as you are completely entitled to do, swap head units after you know it is all working properly if that is what you want to do.
