Help with coolant connection to 5e-fhe TB

Postby markoneswift » Sun Aug 02, 2015 5:06 pm

Hi all, need some urgent help with getting my TB reconnected and everything running again. I've hooked up the coolant lines in what I think is the right order ( inlet - straight connection at the rear, outlet - angled on the bottom of the IAC ) but for some reason I don't seem to get the correct coolant flow. If I run the engine with inlet connected but outlet open, I get coolant pouring out of the angled outlet which seems right ? The angled outlet runs back to the back of the head - could there be a blockage there somewhere ? I know which way the vac lines run, that's all good, but confused about the coolant lines.

When I hooked it all up initially, I had a high and surging idle. I know my IAC is good because I cleaned it all and tested with cold / heat and a compressed air blow through. It had been seized open for a long time.

All help much appreciated :-)

Hey mate, yeah kinda but I need to know the flow direction of the green and orange - I assume it matter?? Green goes to thermostat housing, orange to return to pump by the look of things?

There's a very small outlet on the back of the thermostat housing which may or may not be blocked - going by the diagram you found, that would be the input into the TB.

I have no experience with a 5e but from the looks of the way the water pump appears to operate the Orange pipe would be the return from the throttle body as the water looks to flow into the back of the water pump.

That's what I'm thinking, but I wonder whether it matters which way round the inlet / outlet go on the TB ? Currently, I have the flow going up into the TB then returning down through the IAC and out of the angled pipe on the end of the IAC. I don't know if this is correct.

What I would like to see is a diagram or picture of the 5e thermostat housing so I can figure out the connections. If I disconnect the coolant hoses from the TB I do not get water flow so I think the supply from the t/stat housing must be blocked.

Is that what you are after? Doesn't have the lines attached to it but I think it's the very bottom left one. As in the diagram below the photo.

Put your chassis number into this website http://toyota.epcdata.ru/ and go to the engine section. Under fuel injection system it shows the throttle body diagram and under coolant pipe for water outlet housing. If it's a Japanese car it might not come up. Failing that there is this hard to read diagram.

For some reason my internet is playing up so I can't link it for you, but search "4efte throttle body water lines" in google, theres a photo showing which one goes to which.

Thanks Stu, that does show the angled connection as being connected to the t/stat, so that goes with what I thought. Warm coolant goes in through the angled line, up through the TB and back down into the return to the water pump along the back of the engine. I just have to work out why no coolant comes out of that hose now - it's connected via quite a small reducer so maybe there's a blockage in there somewhere.
