At last scrutineering it was picked the fire extinguisher in my race car had been tested longer than 6 years ago. The extinguisher has a tag showing pressure testing date, done before I bought the car.
I've got the same extinguisher for work vehicle which appears to have the date stamped at the neck '10/12'. However it hasn't been pressure tested, but the gauge shows its healthy.
Under the MSNZ manual it says: Service/Validity 6 years*
*All extinguishers must be checked on a regular basis by the vehicle owner/competitor to ensure contents pressure and approximate weight requirements are met.
What exactly does the wording of the MSNZ rule mean? Does the extinguisher need to be pressure tested and tagged or do I just need to weight it and check the pressure guage?
And does the 6 years relate to the testing or the actual age of the extinguisher? ie, I need to throw it out after 6 years?
Thanks

it means it must be tested and re-stamped (or hole punched in tag and service label, or whatever applies to your particular extinguisher) by a testing place or person every six years.
In between times, you (the competitor) are to ensure that the powder hasn't congealed into a solid lump, and that the gauge is in the green.
Or, given that these days an extinguisher with a compliant bracket is $20 at Bunnings, you bin it, and buy a new one.

Or give it good shake up, check it's in the green and mount it in your tow vehicle, shed or the kitchen cupboard.....
