4AGE blacktop - what is this??

Postby Lucky13 » Tue Jun 14, 2016 9:30 pm

Hi all

I have an AE101 Trueno with a blacktop conversion. I was doing some work under the hood when I noticed this random plastic thing on the end of a wire just hanging there... what on earth is it??

Something jammed in the end of the hose to block it off.

*sorry you say wire but that looks like a vacuum hose in the pics.
Definitely a wire??

Either way it's doing the same job.

What is the wire connected to? Look like it's going to the old AFM plug?

It is definitely connected to a pair of wires. These go back to this plug...

This plug then disappears into the mass of wires near the diagnostic plug. As you can see there is also another pair of wires connected to the plug, these then go to this device on the intake manifold...

That plug does look like the AFM connector off a silvertop but as it is now a blacktop it has a MAP sensor... not too sure why they would go to the effort to wire this little white plastic thing into a now redundant plug??

I should have drawn which device on the second photo but its the round metal thing with the hose going into it.

It could be splice connector. Joins the two wires together.

I know in the US people convert their GEN2 AFM 3SGTEs to run GEN3 MAP computer. You have to do something with the AFM to make it all work. That might be why the AFM plug has wires coming from it. It's definitely not factory.

The silver round metal thing with the hose going to it is a FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator). The FPR is usually only controlled by vacuum from the hose you mentioned so not sure why it has wires going to it.

The black thing to the side of it could be a MAP sensor.

This is the inlet air temperature sensor that sits inside of the AFM. Somebody been lazy, pulled apart AFM and used that as the air temperature sensor from inside of the afm as temperature sensor for black top ECU.
I don't think they are identical in specs but close enough (and ECU does not pay much attention to the air temp. sensor anyway).

This is simply lazy as by gutting AFM they avoided following:
Running wires for MAP sensor.
Running wires for Temp sensor.

In addition, possibly they reused silver top loom thus the ECU plugs would be spliced. Instead they should have used the blacktop loom and spliced the fusebox end (much cleaner).

I would be cautious regarding fuel cut relay: make sure the pump is not running permanently when ignition is on (fire hazard in case of accident).
Why I bring up fuel cut circuit? Because AFM is responsible for it, while black top has an output on the ECU.

Thanks for that. After looking at a wiring diagram I figured it probably was the air temp sensor but when I did a search online the pictures of said part didn't look anything like it. I would say the silvertop loom has been used, unfortunate as it is a track/sprint/hill climb car that has had a lot of time and money put into it. It seems the auto sparky that was paid to do the wiring didn't put the same amount of effort in as the guys that did the rest of the work.
