1kz-Te head replacement - break in procedure

Postby steve74 » Sun Aug 07, 2016 1:05 pm

Hi Guys

Not sure if this is a question for you lot or should be directed at a 4x4 site?

I cracked the head on my supercustom van and after weighing up all the options my mechanic talked me into a Spanish AMC brand head kit. The kit was reasonably priced and came with everything including water pump, cam belt, oil and filter. The oil they have supplied in the kit is SB/CB oil and a quick search tells me this oil is designed for cars made before 1958? There is also a zinc additive? It there a method behind this madness?

What's the best way, as I'm happy to ditch what I've been sent for a better option.

If the head came complete with a new camshaft, it does need to be bedded in, and it requires a high ZDDP oil to ensure it doesn't wreck the cam lobes.
So yep, use that oil for the first few ks, then you can change it to the correct grade.

My cam buckets and shims were transferred accross, it was a bare head with new valve stem seals fitted.

Sounds like they use the SB oil as it has no detergents so won't wash the oil off? Am I right?
