96 Toyota Caldina st195g 3sfe leak question

Postby blobbi » Sun Sep 04, 2016 8:58 am

I have a 96 Toyota Caldina st195g with a 3sfe
It smells of oil after running but there is no significant oil usage or coolant loss. No overheating.
I have noticed a leak in two spots, the first is on the front of the engine block near the exhaust cover and the second on the passenger side. It looks like water rather than oil and I wondered where it is likely to be coming from?Photos here:

Engine. 1st leak in middle, second to right.

2nd to right of engine block

I was going to replace the valve (rocker) gasket as it's an easy and cheap job to see if this helps but wondering if there is something obvious I am missing.

Oil will likely be running from the back of the head onto the exhaust, cam cover gasket will help heaps.

Thanks for the reply. I'll get cracking with it. Would you routinely replace the spark plug seals when doing this, no oil on the plugs that I noticed when I changed them.

Absolutely, along with bolt washer seals. I think a kit is all of $50.

Thanks to those who replied. This was a well worth while job and pretty easy to do, even for me as this was by far the biggest job I have done on a car ever.

I had no instructions for a caldina so had to undo a bolt here and there which was not described in the 3sfe rocker cover gasket replacements FAQ's I used alongside the Toyota manual (which was handy as some people were completely covering the whole of the gasket in gasket sealant rather than just the points as directed by the manual.

There were two complete gaps in the old seal that were leaking oil onto the front of the engine. I also put some gasket seal around the plug on the right side (looking at the engine) as there was none there originally and an oil leak below it.

Pictures of the two places where the old gasket was cracked:

I also replaced the spark plug seals as suggested. Thanks for that.

The only problem I encountered was that the coolant temperature sensor connector was very friable and must of disintegrated when I took it out with lots of plastic remnants left in there. I had to remove the temp sensor, put my finger over the hole to stop coolant pouring out, turn it upside down, the plastic bits fell out and I was able to use the original wire to connect it up. Works like a dream. No obvious seal problems. Very happy. Time will tell I guess.
