AE111 Drum-Disc brake conversion

Postby BillyTheDog » Sun Dec 18, 2016 4:23 pm

Was just wondering how hard/expensive it would be to do a rear disc conversion on a AE111? I know that the BZ-R came with rear discs, but my XZ has dirty old drums, that make a hell of a racket when I apply the brakes (lots of squeaking and shuddering). I'm assuming that if I get all the relevant parts of a BZ-R, it should be a relatively straight forward conversion? I have heard apparently some issues with the hand brake not working after... Anyone done this before? Or even better is there another model I can get them off, that means I can just rock up to Pick-a-Part and get the stuff off? What would I need?

It's a super straight forward swap, just make sure you get the hubs and brake cables too. Did my AE101, took roughly an hour.
Bear in mind that it will require cert though.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Just get your brakes fixed. At one point I had BZG and XZ or something, whatever has the 4AFE. 4AFE had unknown pads in it, and braked better than my BZG with stock pads. So my advice would be to just get what you have fixed. How are you certain it's the drums that are causing the shudder? Just sounds like a lot of work and cost for no gain IMO. Different story if it was a track car.
