Turbo filtering options in tight space

Postby Vertigo » Sun Jan 22, 2017 2:57 pm

Hey guys. I bought an awesome manifold with TD05HR turbo for a good deal, that came from a race spec Corolla, so FWD. Have just test fitted, and while it bolts up fine, the inlet to the turbo opens to all the gearbox linkages n shit, practically touching them. Of course, that shit is on the other side of the gearbox on Corollas. I have no doubt itd run fine, but I would like some sort of air filter or inlet piping on it, which is just not going to happen as is. Rerouting the linkages and clutch lines/slave cylinder is not an option.

I have enough room to maybe fit a mesh screen with some sort of foam covering. What should I do? If I have to, I will source another manifold and/or turbo - but Id like to avoid this if at all possible.

This is the turbo:

Would be awesome if I could find a turbine housing with the opposite geometry to this, so the compressor faces the front of the engine instead. Do these exist?

A td05 16g spins the other way. So that would make everything face the other way. Don't think it would fit the manifold though and the options are a bit more limited. Is it possible to weld a 180 bend onto the housing and go the other way? Could you put a spacer plate on and drop the turbo height a bit or Will that not help at all?
"You can't do it like that!." "Why not?"

adapter plate that attaches to manifold, so turbo faces other way?

If all fails you could find a housing that has flange on inlet similar to this:

And then bolt a 90 degree adapter to that flange.

Note: not affiliated with turbocare ;).
