What engine for my carina?
Moderator: The Mod Squad
yeah no offence man, but i kinda want some hard proof about the weight of a 13bt
cause i seem to remember a renesis engine with all the shit hanging off it was in the 90kg mark
i would have though a 13bt would be fairly similar, but i have no idea really
someone out there must know there rotaries???

Yes, the 13B turbo may be heavier due to less internal space, but the physical size of the motor is what makes them so awesome for weight distribution, they can be set so low and so close to the firewall, that I'd say they'd be better than a 1UZ in a small car anyday. And you don't even need to go turbo, get a peripheral port 13B, run a dirty huge IDA, you'll be pulling close to 300hp at 11,000rpm.. and for a motor that small with a few decent mods (well, modded oil feed, doweled block, lightened rotors, carbon apex seals etc) you'd have plenty of power, great handling, and you'll have to beat the rotor skanks off with a cricket bat! Hahaha..

the rx7 would be a nice car if it had a better motor
Evil_si had it sorted....
yes you could probably get the 13b in a better posistion, but what do they cost cmpared to a 1uz?

My mate picked up a 12A minus manifolds, and carried about 30m.. lets' see anyone here do that with a 1UZ! 13B turbos are slightly longer and considerably heavier, not sure how much more though.. but 185kg seems a tad heavy.
The intermediate plate, end plates and rotors are cast, which is where most of the weight comes from, add to that the crank, oil setup.. and the lack of internal space makes them pretty solid. I'm pretty sure that the later model SR20DETs have an alloy block and head (?) which would make them pretty damn light!

I think your memory illudes you. But really.
A complete 13b NA weighs just under the weight of a complete 1j, and a 13b turbo just over. I cant remember the exact figures ( could google it i guess) but it was something like 145kg for 13b, 160kg for 2j, and 165kg for 13bt.
A 1uz is lighter than 145kg, all alloy ftw.

that weight of 145 must be without accessories.... they are very light motors though, but the accessories arent weightless

A basic 13b block(nothing attached at all)weighs around 85kg. How you could think it weighed much more than that is dumbfounding. If i can pick up my block(albeit not very high off the ground, or for very long) do you really think its going to be over 100kg, let alone the figures you guys are throwing around

around, see thats not an exact figure
i can pick up a gsr gearbox in one hand and hold it in place while it gets bolted up, yet i cant tell you how much it weighs..
i did a google search and averaged a few results.
and you dont just put the bare block in a car and go for a drive.. unless your name is barney or fred
