When it comes to cars what can you do / have you done.

i guess i'm probably inbetween Engine swapper / Gearbox changer / Clutch fitter and the next two
didn't know jack shit about cars a few years ago, but after $$% around with the ae85 i learnt fairly quickly
everything in cars is logical, just throw yourself in the deep end and you will figure it out eventually
things i can't do is fabrication (have welded shit together before, but nothing serious)
i'm sure i could rebuild a simple engine, problem is i don't have the tools to do it (not many people have head plaining/boring etc etc machines laying round at home)
luckily for me my flat mate is an engine reconditioner, so he can do all the tricky stuff haha

IMO anyone can mod cars...its the thought and process that goes with it that makes the differance
to do it well you really need a degree in metals and a trade in fitting turning and welding
then you really need teh ability to stress test ya parts .....
this is why we have certifiers
they know why your mounts are gunna brake
or why your brakes are to small
or why knotching the chassis rail there is bad
thats why they like to be involved in the process
they get a feel for you understanding and can correct you before you go to far astray

I used to know almost nothing about cars 2 months ago, after owning my supra for 2 months, I've learnt alot of things; sandblasting, spraypainting (dash pieces), oil changes, detailing, general mods, pulled my dash apart probably 6 times, fitted a new headunit, I think you get the idea.
I think it's amazing how much I've learnt (with some help of course) in such a short time, I put myself in the Standard modder category, although I could probably be in the next on if givrn the right direction and a need to do it

Im a beginner engine installer, did a 4K+K50 swap in the starlet, pretty simple.
Anything above that (tuning, rebuilding, fabricating etc) the chequebook comes out
Lol just noticed this thread is OLD

Standard for me, can do most things if I put my mind to it ask a few questions & of course have the right tools. Like many I assume tools are a problem sometimes.
I'd like to learn to do clutch/engine swaps/gearboxes & learn to weld so I can do some small fab work.
Just all a matter of time, money, and having a garage all coming together at the right time.

Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

Hmmm this is mostly stuff I have done in the past
So far I can:
Oil/filter change etc.
Change a tire on a tire machine and balance it too.
Pull a motor out and replace it - easy haha
Bodywork
Plate up rust in my car
Quite a bit of audio stuff including fibreglass and boot installs
I'm only 18 tho so I have a lot of learning ahead of me
