shouldnt make much difference to the sound man. really with the pod only put it on if u can get cold air running into it. ie cold air box. not sure on the 1/4 mile time sry.

this has been covered extensivly before, but i realise the search engine is poo so i will post this up,
mayb i should write this up as a new post and a moderator can make it sticky for me.
common questions about 20v's:
1) how do i make it faster,
make it breath, the best thing you can do is to do the exhaust and filter, removing the cat gives huge gains, and the best system is a 2 and a 1/4 inch, as straught as you can get ( which is diffucult due to the layout underneath the car) u are gonna need at least one mandrel bend, and if u angle mout the muffler thats all you need, mine has two cobys and and rps and is still too loud, so keep that in mind when choosing ur exhaust.
pod filters are a very good idea, but the 20v being an n/a car it doesnt pay to muck around with the intake that much, if u can move ur battyer to the boot then put in a custom airbox behind the headlight with a good intake into it, or use the stock intake system and use a panel filter.
2) what quarter mile times does it do.
dependin on driver, tyres, wheels and track, an ae101 bone stock usually does around 16-17 quarters, but with basic mods 15's are acheivable.
3) What oil do i use?
15w40 is what i use, anything too light and they will drink it, try useing a semi synthetic, i use redline, but magnatec is good.
thats all i can think of rite now cos im tired, i will search the forums and post up more shit later, otherwise pm me if you wanna know more, i dont pretend to know everything but i can at leats tell you who does

yep what Dan said is pretty much it,
try to get as much cold air in as possible and then free up the exhaust as much as you can without making it too loud.
once you've done that there are other options but they do get a bit expensive and start to ruin your fuel economy. some things you can do along these lines are a high compression head gasket, more aggressive cams, aftermarket computer...
with quarter mile times a stock one will generally do low 16's, my old one (now got20v?'s one) did a 16 flat with just the lightweight wheels and some grippy tyres with everything else standard and a dodgy gearbox.
it also seems from what I've seen that facelift ae101's tend to be slightly quicker than the non facelift ones.
these days there are a lot of tired ones around and it depends how hard a life yours has had as to how fast it will go.
with oil as said above i use semi synthetic valvoline in mine but i always used to use magnatec, it seems if you go any thinner the 20valve engines start to drink it at a pretty alarming rate.

well im running flat 15s and the odd 14.8 on a completely stock 20v .... only mod i have made is simosa pod and extractors .... mind you my car only weighs 800kg
cold air is good though ... also make sure your cars not running to cool .. if it does the vvt wont switch on and theres a power loss ... my car ran 15.4 without any vvt and with it back on and no other changes was 15 flat ....

arrgh that makes me feel cool it still does 16 flats with the exhaust and filter, then again masterton seems to be a slower track than meremere.
and oh yeah, thee things do drink REAL fast, i found that one out, somethings cgone totally bung with mine (sticky valve methinks) which is probabaly due to the oil getting hot due to ther ebeing none in there.

yeah theres so many things that can affect your time that its not really good to compare. things like track prep and ambient temperature can make quite a difference, and if that gearbox has got any worse then that wont help either.

If you really want to go drag racing make sure your pod filter, if you put one on, ends up right behind the passenger side head light! Then when it comes to race time you can pull out the headlight and hey presto instant cold air feed! Also the only change i would make to your exhaust is a flange so that you can drop the whole thing off from the headers back for racing!
Standard silvertop will run a mid-high 16
Mine with above moda + a few other thigs like cold airbox light weight rims etc runs a 14.7 best so far hopefully that will drop slightly witha better prep'd meremere track
Hey got20 and raza just in case you were wondering mastertons a 1/4 mile while meremere's only 400m! Might not sound like much but from general experience but 400m takes about .05 - .1 of a second less time to cover than 1/4 mile dependant on what speed your doing at the end etc etc

well.....
ewan got 108kw with his worked up silvertop...fairly extemsively worked without head porting
some chinese guy there got 104kw ??
and that was with a almost stock blacktop
eg airbox filter extractors (maybe) but no engine work
was enought to convince ewan to go to a blacktop so it will be interesting to see what this motor produces with some development
as for cost....
you sould get $500-600 for your old silvertop with loom
bout a grand for a blacktop with all the trimmings
so for 400-500 bucks what could you do to a silvertop
extractors and exhaust
and that wont really gain you much power
its not my call to make but to me that seems not to bad

I had 126bhp at the wheels in one of my silvertops on a Dynopac dyno. On the same dyno and a blacktop motor (different day same car) I got 132 bhp at the wheels.
Dont forget that Toyota rate these motors at 165 and 170bhp respectively, so there can't be that much in it.

not saying tring to say theres miles
but from the development ive seen and heard the blacktop seems to respond better to mods than the silvertop
i guess there has to be a reason they changed them
this is not law and is only my opinion
please read it as that
from what ive seen sofar the silvertop donsent respond with gains in h/p as well as the blacktop
im sure ths could be easily argued
regardless
the first item you sould look at buying when modding a efi car is the ecu
that way you can get the most from any onther money you speend on it

your prices for the engine are on the lower side of the scale.. a deal with 2nd hand engines every day and blacktops commonly go for over $1200inc gst.... not saying there arnt deals out there but...
when you factor in the costs and work needed then a 4agze is a better proposition than a blacktop.
but bear in mind that it really depends what you want to end up with... if your chasing 200hp then the ze is the easiest to get that from...

no
you can just buy a set of 4agze pistons and rings(for best deal see me
) and fit them, the rods and cranks are the same.
4agzes are getting hard to find and getting up there is price! for the cost of buying one you could rebuild your 20v with ze pistons, TRD bearings and ARP rod bolts etc etc for one tough 20v
