removing 20v ram tubes
I noticed when i opened my silvertop 20v throttle body up to be cleaned that there were some plastic ram tubes inside it and was wondering if anyone on these forums has removed them or had some better ones made up for the 20v.
I heard that removing them will give gains in top end power but im going to take them out and see what it is like.

people have removed them but I wouldn't
they are a particular length and shape to maximise power and torque through the rev range and any gains at the top will be ruined by loss at other points in the range.
There were some aftermarket ones for sale in the parts section over the last week or two I think - have a look there anyway

are you on twincam? i just explained why there..
basicly the longer the runner AFTER the butterfly the more top end hp you have the longer the runner BEFORE the butterflys the more low range torque you have, thats rather generaly speaking though.
so as i said before unles youv made modifications that would suit removing them, leave themin place. but no harm in pulling them out and seeing what you think. you wont stuff anything

rev head is right i took mine out and when i raced at taupo it just didnt have the grunt out of the slower corners .but unfortunalely i thought i would be smart and cut the flanges off the ram tubes after i had removed them i am now making new alloy ones i can graft back on the flanges
i think i got the specs from redmist. it would probably go all right at puke
because you are so much further up in the rev range
cheers dave

There are a tonne of arse dyno reports of getting more power up high. This is total bollocks, your loosing mid range which in turn makes a bigger kick into the upper power band.. it seems faster, especially with the added induction roar, but it's sygnificantly slower.
You want to lookup posts here or on a search engine for Helmholtz (its' the theroy behind intake length tuning)
Dave, nice post! Good to see someone with imperical evidence, a lap time always proves a arse dyno, lip dyno or even a true dyno wrong.
Daniel.

The answer is Helmholtz!

oh yeah sorry .. me read to fast at times
...
the differences are the shape of the butterflys and inlet tract form the butterflys to head. the in not sure of the overall size difference but the later one is a bigger surface area i believe, i think the diameter is the same though, blacktop ones are larger. i think redmist has the exact info as hes got most of those bits scattered amoungst his racers!
