I need a helmet
I went into buy a helmet today and the guy was asking what kind of helmet i needed, i said i needed one for drag racing and circuit racing and then he asked me what standard of helmet i needed. I asked what he ment and he said oh everyhelmet has a different standard all depending on what it needs to be used for. Most of them there were E1. which means general use. What kind of helmet standard do you need to use for the strip or track?
The big E1 in the circle is just telling you that the country of standard approval is Germany.
It's actually the first two numbers of what looks like a serial number under that, that are actually the standard. It tricks absolutely everyone.
02, 03, 04 and 05 are accepted by MotorSport NZ (not sure about drags). 01 standard (first two number of serial remember, NOT the number in the circle beside the big E) is gone. 05 is the newest.

Heh, if he says that, he needs a quick slap up the side of the head, as he's very wrong
Helmet Standards:
Vehicle occupants shall wear protective helmets that comply with one of the following standards:
New Zealand NZS 5430
Australia AS 1698
British BS6658-85 type A (blue label), BS 6658-85 type A/FR, including all amendments
Snell Foundation Snell SA 90, Snell M90, Snell M95, Snell SA 95, Snell SA 2000
America ANSIZ -90.1
Europe ‘E’ Mark 02, 03 04 or 05 series amendments (homologation number beginning ‘02’, ‘03’, '04' or ‘05’ immediately followed by production number)
Thats the latest info I have, none of those have been supersceded but there may be new ones.

add to that:
Sfi Spec 31.1A, 31.2A, 31.1, 31.2
Snell M2000
and that's the full MotorSport NZ list.
Spend a bit more than the lowest priced helmet - cheap helmet for cheap brain.
Try the helmets out in the shop. Put it on, do the strap up and then spend 5 minutes wandering around the shop looking at everything while you are wearing it. Do this with several helmets so you get an idea of which one is the most comfortable.
Will you look like a dork while you are doing this? Yes
Will you regret it once you have a comfortable helmet? No
If you haven't ever worn a helmet before it is hard to tell the difference between a good fit and an uncomfortable fit unless you wear it for 5 minutes.
If you haven't worn a full face before - once you get it home wear it while you are watching tv. Wear it for 5 or 10 minutes every night for a week so you get used to the full face. Practise having the visor 1/4 down, 1/2 down, 3/4 down, fully down. This is to avoid/reduce hassles when you wear it on the track or drag strip. You can concentrate on driving and not worry about how the helmet feels.
My 200 cents worth anyway.
