FWD to RWD
Is it possible to convert a AE111 to RWD?
Any idea of what would need to changed?
Cheers

do you want your car to be street legal by the time it's finished?

Sure, you can do it!
It will cost you at least 20 grand however.
(this is not just a guess, its been done before by someone here. Matt Dunn I would presume?)
Hmm, selling it for a RWD car instead just starts to look better and better.

20g? im sure it could; be done cheaper, but obviously that depends on how much you can do yourself.
but how well it will work out in the end will be the real question.
That 1uz twin turbo gtfour rc clearly shows that the chassis wasnt meant to have a high horsepower rear wheel drivetrain.

See the animal in his cage that you built. Are you sure what side you're on?

Angle grinder? Nah. Just make friends with a fireman, and borrow the jaws of life for a few hours.
Then again, Nyle Buckleys Corona is a nice peice of work!
started as a rear end crashed 1997 corona. Which was incredibly close to becoming a parts car at a wreckers.
However it ended up as an 800hp, 1.5jz powered, RWD, tube framed and tubbed, 10 second quarter mile drag machine.
So it is possible if you have the skills/money.
Apparently it only cost Nyle in the region of $5000 all up to do the corona.
But it pays to note that HUGE amounts of labour were involved, and he did all the work himself.

Why do you say that? Ive seen a vid of the GT4 doing skids, but thats about it. What was wrong with it?
And I bet making a GT4 RWD would be a shite load easier than an AE111!
Ok, so you already have the blacktop... and because you said possibly, lets say you're going to keep it N/A for the time being
biggest thing you need to do is work out the best weight distribution with the engine/drivetrain you're using.
Heres a list off the top of my head of things that i think would need to be either done, or investigated.
- Custom floorpan, firewall and transmission tunnel.. This would completely reform the car to the point you'd need to rework seatbelt mountings, seat mountings, interior trim, carpet, console plastics, positioning of things like wiring and heater bits and pieces behind the dash.
- Also your current steering rack and links, it may need to be reconfigured depending on weither or not it fits under the gearbox comfortably.
- Custom mounting of the engine in N/S config. Will need to include new mounts and crossmember
- Work out what gearbox you want to use. Will need more custom mounts fabricated to hold this properly.
- Complete rear suspension, diff, axels, driveshaft, subframe, hubs, brakes etc... need to work out what parts you'd use there.
- you'd want to either bin the std fuel tank and replace with a fuel cell, or possibly re position standard fuel tank to make way for driveshaft and front half of diff that runs through that area...
- find somewhere for your exhaust to run... could possibly run near the driveshaft if you designed it right...
thats about all the major stuff i can think of that you'd want to consider... and i bet theres a massive chunk of it i've left out... like all the finniky little bits, like wiring, intake, exhaust manifolds etc etc...
that situation may be a little bit towards the extreme end of the scale, but better to plan for the worst....

yes the gtfour to rwd would be easier.
do you not see the hatch open with the flex of the chassis?
they arent the most solid of cars to start with, try jacking one side up and try and close the door.
im not saying they are bad cars, just not that suited for a high hp rwdtrain.
nyles corona cost less than 10g and would only be good for straight line work. (runs 9s now i believe)

you are probably better off to look at it like that and anything that is not required is a bonus.
Just htinking about it abit more, if you wanted to make it work properly you would need to get all the right bits (read costing lots)
so yeah probably parts alone would eat up a big chunk of that 20g.

indeed you are.
you're better to decide what bits you want to use, then massage and design the car around that.

yep, because since you were going through all that trouble you might as well get a decent lsd, might as well get decent suspension.
then a very decent loan.

The first one we built took around two years of spare time,
the second one took a few months of full time,
and if your paying for all the work, 20G is probably most of the way there,
but if you want it road legal,
well i'll let you know how our project goes in a few months.
