Best roads with twisty bits in NZ

Post by AirNZ »

Top stretches of twisty blacktop in no particular order...

That road into Kaitaia with like 82 consecutive turns
The road between Napier and Gisborne
The road between Queenstown and Glenorchy
The road in Lyttleton up by the gondolas
The road between Gisborne and Whakatane taking a left at the sweeping 55
Scenic Drive west Auckland
Devils staircarse in Queenstown
Coronet peak now that it's sealed
Arthurs pass before they built the bridge through the middle cutting out all the best bits
The range just north of wellington

etc...

Lets make a list of 'must drives' up and down the country.

I like the Rimutaka Hill between Wellington and Featherston.
Back roads out to Martinborough.
Wainuiomata Hill For short fast blats.
Belmont hills.
Paekokariki Hill Between Wellington and Paraparaumu.

Havent really explored that much but will in the next few years!

Here are two of my favourite roads. The red one is really windy around Mangakino/Whakamaru.

Thats one awesome road. That first 35? corner is a killer if you go in too hot in 3rd gear  *crossed up, using both lanes to recover*

That $&#$% huge straight that goes past Culverden? Yea those bumps are good fun at lose-your-licence speeds :D Apparently some Porsche (years ago) beat a speed camera down that straight  (i.e. couldnt get plate as was travelling too fast :P )

Another great road is the twisties from Greymouth out past Punakaiki then pretty much to the Westport turnoff. Dad was born and raised round those parts, he says good times were had :D. From the limited experiences I've had on the roads (with rest of family in a big 4WD) it looks like a hell of a road to drive on, so next time we go there for a holiday I'll worm my way into driving it :D

Sounds like a first kiss sort of place, either that or somewhere Lewis passed.

Yeah the just under 3 1/2hrs or so that it takes to get from SH1 through the Lewis to Nelson is a very cool road. The road changes so much from rolling hills with sweeping long corners to nice long straights and lovely twisty bits through the forest sections.
