I guess you guys don't live in the manawatu....

I have seen this memo. And it was on the front page of the newspaper.

Its all bullshit, it doesnt prove anything. It says something like:

"This week is the last week of the accounting year, so got get out there and get us a good result for the end of the year". Or something.

THERE IS NO QUOTA SYSTEM! Power is just being a knobhead as oppisition to make labour face up.

It was some random acting sgt that wrote the memo, not anyone high up/important/knows what they are doing.

Ring any traffic cop. Ask them if there is a quota.

They are expected to have several "CONTACTS" a hour, that doesnt mean tickets, means talking to someone.

And futhermore, why does everyone care if they are giving out 50 tickets a hour? You still have to do something wrong to get a ticket, in which case you deserve it.

Don't want a ticket, don't do anything.

the problem is when the officer is question is behind..... then they start handing out tickets for dubious reasons.
remember so many "laws" in nz are down to the individuals interpritation.

what i mean is if the officer is behind his quota!!

if a traffic cop doesnt hand out a certian amount of tickets, he gets in the shit.
there was a big fuss about it in nelson a coupla years ago when frontline cops where being sent out on traffic duty as they wernt issuing enough fines.

no thats just it.... it was the ticket numbers that was the problem......

THEY WERE BEHIND QUOTA

fines is a BIG source of income for the government.
and they wont do anything to curtail that

yea ur rite if ur doing something wrong u r guna get a ticket, but lets face it, highway patrol hav lost all the respect i have ever had for the police, and even the normal police know that, as last week when i was working at the palmy station i had a convo with a couple of officers bout the lack of respect people have for the police, respect has to go both ways and if cops just pick on young people and abuse them then why the hell are we going to b nice to them, and i have been abused by a officer and issued no fine because he couldnt do me for anything.... theres a line between being a cop and being a clown, iv heard of people getting a ticket for $600 (doing something that may cause annoyance) now a cop can hand that out willy nilly, if u annoy him or ur cars loud u get a $600 fine, thats utter bs, there should be more information on these laws so the cops dont have so much power just to issue you with a fine even if in ur eyes you were doing nothing wrong...

i know for a fact they have a quota, but its misused.

its a quota for the number of contacts per hour, not tickets.

in fact they arent supposed to be ticketing all teh time, its much easier paperwork that way tho.

No, but my mum's a traffic cop.

They have "driving targets". Things that they have to watch out for this week. and specifc people that are going to be harrassed. (normally known desql drivers).

If you want to hear it from the person herself, PM me with your number, and ill get her to ring you.

There's no official quota because then it would be in writing for all to see. A family friend said they are encouraged to ticket 2 people an hour but thats coming from his station commander, not general orders for all officers in NZ on traffic duty.

It becomes a game to some and competitions to see who can get the most tickets in a certain time frame aren't uncommon. As Revhead says, problem is they have too much discretion as to what is breaking the law when it comes to vehicle infringements.

Yeah, thats the contacts. I have heard the damn sgt say in his own words that they are meant to have two contacts a hour. It doesnt mean tickets :?
