Toyota 2.4 diesel
Hey
Just wondering if the 2.4 turbo diesel engines toyota make are any good.
Ive heard lots of problems with the 2.4 turbo diesels in the toyota hilux surfs, but its always been a friends friends friend kind of thing. Ive heard the 3.0 diesels are indestructable tho!
I was always under the impression toyota diesels are very reliable.
Im looking at a 2.4 turbo diesel in a 1986 toyota hilux, not sure if its the original engine though.
Anyone had any good/bad experiences?

Im not so much after power, a 2.4 diesel hilux has come up at a decent price. Cant i just give it more boost or something??
Id like to say this is a upgrade to the current 1.7ltr NA diesel i roll around in. (yes such a sad diesel car does exist, and its a station wagon. it feels like it makes 16hp atw)
Even your great grand mothers corolla would be able to thrash my car in a race
Im after something reliable, that will go and go and go and go. My nissan has threw up a fit of electrical problems.
altinator broke, 2 weeks later starter motor broke, 1 month later waterpump bearings collapsed, 1 week later altinator broke again! Now shes running and im hoping it wont break again!

They're not the greatest motors, as HRT says, try for the 2.4L non-turbo or 3.0L motors.
When I was in the market for a diesel 4WD, almost everyone I spoke to, even "professional" 4WDers, warned me off the 2.4 turbos!
The 2L-T diesel engines have badly designed cooling systems, the earlier ones were prone to overheating/cracking heads, and I've also seen quite a few now that have run bigend bearings. That, and they're pretty gutless.

yeah... the 2L-T (2.4 turbo diesel) have crack head and run bearings problem which is very common. They are expensive as 2nd hand engine too! Somewhere like $2000.
Just the 2.4liter diesel non turbo are great, same as 2.8 liter non tubo are great motor, don't really have problem with them.
the 2.4 turbo diesel came out in Mark2 etc too.

I've got a 2.4 turbo in my 91 Hilux. Its gutless as hell, and the slushbox doesn't help, but its just ticked 190,000, doesn't smoke feck all and has never broken down in the 5+ years we've had it. And we upped the boost to about 13psi when we got it too.
I would routinely thrash this thing down at the Waimak too, bloody good engine as far as im concerned.
That said, when accounting for fuel costs and RUC, we worked it out at costing the same to run as our old 3.8L Commy.
My 2c.

My old mans Surf has the 2.4 T in it.
It is a bit gutless.. and we just replaced the head on it. They do have the problem of warping / cracking heads.
The problem I can see is that they are in a vehicle that is to large for it.
They have to be revved out to make the power needed to move the vehicle.

this may cause problams with over boosting on the turbo ones but i know the 2.4L non turbo`s were haveing alot of problams arround dunedin over heating on the hills like the killmog ect & alot of the guys from the 4WD club found that if you put deasent extractors on them & a 3" pipe with no muflers intil the very back then a deasent one on to knock noise they were running about 8`c colder & evan when towing about 800kg on a trailor they wernt getting any hotter & none have had head problams since that i know of
the factory exuasts just seam to hold the heat & cause to much back pressure/heat under load

Speaking of diesels, drove one of those 05' VW Golf turbo diesels today at work. 6-speed manual with 4wd and f*cking quick!
Maybe you should make one of those motors fit in your ute
