VIEWS/THOUGHTS/OPINIONS: Compulsory insurance for Drivers

With the push to have compulsory insurance, just wanting to see what everyone on here think about it.

Apparently around 80,000 vehicles or so are being driven around with no form of insurance at all.

What are the implications of having complusory insurance?

Does it mean young drivers will have to pay through the nose to get insurance, due to them not having enough experience in driving?

How about modified vehicles?

Also, will it mean cheaper premiums with people with clean record and mulitple years of insurance and experience under their belts?

I like to have at least third party insurance, just incase I collect a Ferrari in my travels

I'm not going to pay one of those off for the rest of my life.

as long as it doesn't go the same way as the uk
because every one mush be insured
all the insurance company put the price up
you have to have insurance so you have to pay

I think its an amazing idea! Bout time anyhow... best thing they could do with the boyracers is make a big well lit drag strip/skid pad in each major area with issues. Would solve the MAJORITY of problems.

Although at the same time your getting issues like who will run it, costs? Security? Supervision? Gangs etc... so who knows

i think it will help, but to what extent..... who knows.

as far as i know, theyre talking about compulsory third party insurance, not full cover.

it would work, if they tighten up on the rules to make it impossible for your average 18yr old to buy a car, register it in dad's name., and get him to insure it with the son down as a driver.... which is how a hell of a lot of your average teenage evo/wrx/silvia etc drivers do it....

personally i reckon they need to change the way the licensing system is worked, bring in power to weight restrictions for learners, stronger penalties for license infringements, especially for those on a learner/restricted license.

Yeah fully, definatly not worth the risk. I've even got insurance on a car I'm borrowing until I find a new one.

Including it in the registration costs could combat this - and remove this part of the rego cost if u can prove u have other insurance for the period of rego. Make it at a reasonable rate and the insurance companies would have to match or better it to keep their customers

Good idea, but in practice, people who dont have rego & wof'd cars arent going get insurance even if it is compulsary

haha, very true... which means there should be a law change so that cars that are caught un registered and un wof'd (and have been for a while) are impounded immediately, and are either bought up to standard or wrecked.

It is a good idea, but will have no effect whatsoever on "boyracers". Just add the premium onto your Super Easy No Security Finance Deal when you buy your new car!

I believe that one of the reasons for idiots in fast cars is the ease of getting finance for it! So many people cannot afford to pay their loans back, yet they don't seem to care and keep taking more credit to get bling for their cars, whilst the finance companies sit back and laugh.

Also restrictions on power to weight ratios, lists of banned cars, tightening of WOF and licensing rules etc, will not stop an 18 year old driving a toyota corolla at 100 kph off a 50k bridge when peer pressure says "drive faster!" from the back seat.
Hell I know a guy who was proud to say he could get his ep80 1 litre starlet to 150kph at 10 am on a saturday in the Taupo CBD!

I say make a Law Against Stupidity! That would surely stop ALL crime?!? :twisted:

Yep, completely ineffective...at least they're not proposing mandatory full insurance

If they make 3rd party insurance compulsory, ill start an insurance company, with premiums of 100$ per year.

Then ill word the policy in such a way that ill never have to pay out.
IE all mods must be listed, and if you crash with different colored fluffy dice i wont pay.

I get 100$ for doing SFA. you get your 3rd party insurance. the world wins.

They are pretty anal about insurance in the UK, they have cameras set up that record every lic plate that goes past, if your driving your car without a valid rego/wof/insurance and it snaps you as driving, you get a lovely ticket in the mail.

1. increase driving age? too many immature drivers out there.
2. compulsory driving schools? maybe a couple of classes could really tighten up driving skills.
3. restrictions on what vehicles can be owned by age.. ie under 18 nothing above a 1.5/1.6, over 18 go for gold as you're an adult.
4. more moderation and stricter oversight on the lending to young people?

i agree with compulsory 3rd party & harsher penalties

Didn't Murph even state that kids shuoldn't be driving at such a young age..

Driving schools may instill even more confidence in drivers.
We want 15 year olds to get shit scared every time they get behind the wheel. Everytime they turn the key they should think "when i $&#$% up this thing is going to kill me" and therefore drive carefull and safe.

Due to NZs relative isolated citys and lack of public transport getting a lisense asap is pretty much critical. Esp with people moving from smaller towns to citys to study etc, they need a licence to travel etc etc.

I say compulsory military training. Little $&#$% need to learn respect. but since modern day society likes to cotton wool everything i dont think its ever going to happen.
