4age into mk1 esky
Hey,
the boss just given me his old mk1 rally car(aftermuch nagging and several boxes of beer). needs a little bit of a rebuild but its not to bad. no major rust has fiberglass guards bonnet and boot.
No motor or box. thinking of a 4age conversion. not sure what 4age ie 16v or 20v. has any one done this conversion befor. im keen to know how to make the engine mounts for either motor
So if any one has any info on how to fabricate them to bolt to the mk1 chassis or just any info on sticking a 4age between the struts it would be greatly appriciated.

Hey sorry can't be of any help but sounds like a real nice project idea.
What about putting a 3sge or 3sgte in it? A 2l or 2l turbo rwd escort would make a very interesting car to drive
But keep us all informed how it goes, especially pics etc.

Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983
does it have an enlargened trans tunnel? i.e auto bodyshell or 'massaged'?
if it does, it will make life a heap easier if you use anything other than OE motor and box.
S/T 20v 4ag fit quite nicely, but it isn't a 5 minute job.
if you are staying NA, why not fit 2.0 ohc sierra motor and box, and wake the motor up a bit.heaps of torque and 200at the fly isn't hard to get. i built a mk2 with this combination and with a bit of Noddyfying to the motor it went real good for not heaps of money.

fangs suugestions are all spot on.....
the 2 ltr can be made to fly....
i guess it depends on what youv got already and the above mentioned trans tunnel. the 4age is the closest to a BDA you can get for not a lot of $$$

have a look on oldschool forums they have a thread on putting a zetec motor out of a mondeo, i think, into escorts, 2lt dohc efi. i wouldnt really muck around with the 2lt tina motor a lot more money involved in gettin some power out of them
thers a guy on oldschool who put a ca18 into his mk1, im going to be doing this when my fx is finished, already got the motor and box not going to turbo it either

My oldman had one in his rally escort.
Had a huge amount of work done on it, twin sidies heaps of compression balancing, big cam, hours and hours of tuning, best it ever made was 144hp at the wheels, not worth the money or effort.

id go 4age over the newer zetec motors, mainly for availbilty and knowledge on them over here.
my mate/mechanic has had many oldskool fords with worked pintos and kent motors, blanced blueprinted forged pistons race cams fully worked heads 45 sidies etc but would of maybe had 160 max, i believe theyrs even a kit to put a zetec motor in

I know some people are going to view this as blasphemy, but one of the guys in my car club has fitted a 13B turbo into his MK2 esky. He cut and rebuilt the firewall to allow the engine to sit back...WAY BACK - the front pulley on the engine sits over top of the crossmember!
Of course this is the guy who also owns an AW11 with an V3(? i think) STI WRX motor in the back of it.....

Yeah, a guy down this way has a similar setup. Had a couple of rides round Levels raceway in it. First time I've ever freaked out in a car, Just made me do this
I've seen examples of Escorts with many of the combinations mentioned here...
* A good mate in the club has a Mk2 with a SR20 in it (you'll know the car, it is the one that made Plays of the Week during the Silver Fern Rally after it turned into a yellow submarine). It has cams and a Link+, from memory I think it was something around 170hp. Not huge but has good torque. This car actually had a Pinto in it before the SR20 and apparently the weight difference between the two was not particularly noticable (the SR20 isn't the lightest motor around...)
* Another mate in the club has a Mk2 with a 13B. Nice car, well set up and seems to be reasonably competitive considering he hasn't tried for max horsepower. Sounds like this car Barks knows of, firewall has been cut and the engine/gearbox is set well back.
* There was a Mk2 in the club scene in Auckland (owned by a guy named 'Grumpy') running a 4AGE. Never seemed to get particularly good results but it may have been as much driver as anything else. I think it had a Celica gearbox behind it and everything seemed to fit quite neatly. You'll probably need to make custom engine and gearbox mounts and a custom driveshaft, then you can mate it up to the standard rear end.
Also, there is a Mk2 up in Northland running a F20A Honda motor and 6 speed box - it is the coolest thing to look inside that car and see the S2000's titanium gearknob sitting in an Escort interior!
If it were me I'd use a 4AGE for cheap fun (while being aware I'm not going to beat every man and his dog), a Zetec if I wanted to keep everything Ford-based or a BDA if I won Lotto
(I still wish I hadn't sold my Mk1... it is pretty hard seeing it turn up and getting thrashed at events I go to

That sounds about right, my oldmans engine can't have been that far off the limit, it ran on avgas FFS!
My brother subscribes to classic ford, its a UK mag, quite a few zetec conversions over there, they do it with off the shelf parts too.

i quoted 200 ATF, which is about 140-ish at the wheels, so where's the hang-up??
be careful comparing what others have done, as the MK1 engine bay appears to be narrower and shorter than the Mk2. remembering the Mk 1 is a pushrod body shell and the Mk2 is OHC.
in all honesty, go with whatever you can get that you have access to plenty of bits and know-how. jap motors are plentiful, but if the shell is tidy enough, a peroid engine will command a higher resale price.
