90 Celica Gearbox: How much oil?

Post by DeeCee »

Just a quickie

going to buy some redline lightweight gearbox oil to give to the mechanic to do a change on the gearbox oil, but how much oil does a standard st185 gearbox take?

off the redline site it says:
Redline wrote:Motor - 10W40 (* Racing- use Race Oils) @ 3.9 Litres = 5 US Quarts
Manual Gearbox - MT90 @ 5.2 Litres = 6 US Quarts
Front Diff - combined with trans
Rear Diff - 75W90 @ 1.1 Litres = 2 US Quarts
Power Steering - Red Line Power Steering Fluid @ 0.9 Litres = 1 US Quarts
Cooling System - Pink WaterWetter heat tranfer agent containing inhibitor PartNo. 80204 (Old RL100) @ 1 Bottles
Fuel System - SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner for Petrol Motors PartNo 60103 (Old RL170) @ 1 Bottles

but according to MR2OC NZ, its around 4 litres? I don't particularly want to be paying for excess product, so how much should I buy?

Also, any reasonably cheap places in Wellington to buy?

can't answer your question,

would like to know what made you choose redline oil tho? I'm looking to replace mine and after reading a few threads including this one: viewtopic.php?t=59938 I decided to go for VMX. So was just wondering why you chose redline?

It will take 5.1L give a take a few 100mL.
Make sure you use GL5 grade oil.
Castrol Multitrax is the way to go.

It will be about that completely empty, but you probably wont get it all out.

I got about 4.7 - 4.8L of Castrol VMX in mine.

Why would you check MR2OC?? MR2's dont run a 4wd gearbox, diffrent transfer case etc.

Every GT-Four oil change I've done has taken between 5 and 6 quarts. Redline 75W90NS has always proven great in gT-Four boxes. ATF is also good but doesn't provide the necessary wear properties.

Cheers everyone..
but the car has been to the mechanic as it has been leaking some serious oil and it looks like the engine is getting pulled to replace all seals, gaskets, hoses etc.

VMX seems to be the go as my mechanic uses castrol, but will look at Redline when the car goes..

new thread time :)

75W will do, if you have LSD (Torsen) then you must use GL5 grade.
2.4-2.6L is the amount for C5X/C6X/C16X.
