Hey guys, I'm thinking of upgrading my FXGT silvertop to a blacktop with a 6 speed box, from what I know in the short amount of time I have been watching trademe All manual BZR's are 6 speed :D All good... and Most (All but one) Manual BZG are 5 speed, I have just found a 6 Speed BZG, is this even possible from factory... or is it a BZR in disguise ;)

What is the difference between the two also please? I imagine the BZR is faster... but I have no idea why! What makes them special?

And anyone keen for a part trade FXGT plus cash your way for a BZR?? :)

Facelift BZG is 6 speed manual without superstrut suspension and factory LSD.

Facelift BZR is 6 speed with superstrut suspension and LSD and bigger front brakes. Some BZR came with factory recaro seats, but extremely rare.

Both car are the same engine, and no BZR is not faster.

If you are planning to get coil over later, I recommend BZG, as adjustable Superstrut are hard to get and twice the price as non-superstrut brand new.

Also these cars are getting old now, and superstrut ball joints are expensive maintence cost and they usually need replacing after 100,000ks. They can cost up to $900 normal toyota retail price [BOTH SIDE] (Correct me if I am wrong).

If I had the chance to choose again, I would have gone for the BZG instead of BZR, just due to maintence cost of the suspension.

Hey thanks for that! Much appreciated! especially seeing as you are an owner!

How much would you recommend spending on a BZR or BZG? Cheers

Is the LSD on the BZG as good as the BZR?

you've mistaken me...hahah, or probably i suck at writing english

BZG have no LSD, no superstrut, and no bigger brakes

BZR have LSD, superstrut, and bigger brakes

depends what you are aiming to achieve. just a daily driver? or a semi track/ street machine.

But don't expect to get POWER without spending heaps of money! If for daily driver, I probably only upgrade the handling side of things with a good quality exhaust and NO POD FILTERS!

BZg superstruts have lsd, you can find out on the diff code - 04A is open diff 04C is lsd. Many threads about this.

IIRC the lsd is a torsion diff, but someone may correct me on that.

O I C... Just after a daily driver but I do like to have a bit of fun behind the wheel... Work starts early most days... :)

Ok, I'm keen for a BZ-R if they are the better option, however are quite alot more costly in the scheme of things if there isn't much difference...

So the Pod should go then? I have one on my FX the noise out of the standard airbox isn't satisfying enough for me... :D I'll have to read up on the pros and Cons...

Bigger brakes? why what do they have compared to the twinpots on bzgs?

I thought only superstrut models have the twinpot brakes, my BZG doesnt have twinpot bakes.

ok sorry should have said s/s has the twinpots, does the bzr have bigger ones than that? Cause i dont think so.

Speaking to a guy this weekend about his AE111 Carib - 6 speed. He didn't rate the gearbox at all.

He said he bought it due to it being a 6 speed, then about a month later regretted it due to the gearing. Depends if you like to change gears unnecessarily or not really. 5 Speed has nice long gears, 6 speed doesn't.

Go for the 5 speed imo. Stronger boxes too.

Incorrect, best to make sure you know for a FACT what you write is correct as otherwise people will get wrong advice.

As said above, BZG can have many options.

hahahah, it must be my english!

WHAT I MEAN IS!

BZR are all superstrut = twin pot = bigger brakes!

BZG WITHOUT superstrut = NO TWIN POT = smaller brakes!

Now I am ONLY talking about FACELIFT! and not PRE-FACELIFT.

I know pre-facelift you get superstrut etc, but for FACELIFT BZG with 6spd box are all non-superstrut.

I shall get my Toyota catalogue that i bought from ebay to prove it, as I am sure someone will disagree with me...

Ok i found my book.
I bought this at Toyota Museum at Tokyo when I visited Japan end of last year.

Sorry i only have my camera phone with me, so the quality is not the greatest, But I used MS paint to translate some of the words.

THIS IS ONLY FOR THE FACELIFT MODEL!!!!!!!!

My opinion is the BZRs aren't worth the extra money. I had a BZ-G Trueno. Was a great car. Had superstrut, so had an LSD.
I had to replace the superstrut joints, but once that was done, it was sweet as. Oh, the rear sway bar bushes go on them as well, so replace with some urethane ones and they wont be a problem again.

From memory BZG is faster over 1/4 mile than BZR, and is faster 0-100 as you spend less time changing gears in the BZG.

The BZG box is also stronger than the BZR.

At 100km/h the BZG and BZR are both doing the same revs, so not much difference in economy (for long trips) if you are looking at that.

I have seen "BZR's" in NZ that are registered as "BZR" that have an auto box. Only ever seen them in carparks so can't get a chassis number or anything fancy dancy like that.

We have to be clear here. the 5 speed c56 is stronger than the 6 speed c160.

facelift BZG came in 6 speed too, and i think this was the original question of the post.

(All but one) Manual BZG are 5 speed, I have just found a 6 Speed BZG,
