g timers

Post by AE82 FXGT »

Sup all,

I did a search on these but it didn't yeild much in the way of results.
Just after opinions and experiences with g tech/ g timer type devices.
I scoped out a few:

v box
http://www.racelogic.co.uk/?show=VBOX
too much $$$

escort passport g timers
http://www.myradardetector.com/passport_g-timer.htm

and g-tech by tesla
http://www.gtechpro.com/ss.html

anyone have any info?

I used to have an older g tech timer which I thought was quite good, was a bit annoying to use mainly cause you had to level it, but this new one you don't.
The amount I spend would depend on the features and what I need etc.

(And before you guys pipe up, my mate has an airstrip on his farm for top dressing)

check out the performance box and driftbox also by racelogic.

they cost about a grand but have almost the same features as the VBOX.

just not as accurate. speeds are .1kph instead of .01kph.

still pretty good!

http://www.performancebox.co.uk/
12.7@174kph. no turbo, no supercharger, no NOS, ALLMOTOR.

Also found this site that sells the g tech in NZ

http://www.toptown.co.nz/gallery/item/view/89/233/

but that one is $400

according to google 200usd (on tesla site) = 292nzd

but on top of that for shipping.

Also if I purchase something from the US do I have to pay a tax or something when it hits NZ borders?
I haven't purchased anything form overseas before...

Yes I have looked at the drift box etc they have NZ agents
http://www.driftbox.co.nz/

not sure if I want to spend that much, so far g tech looks like good bang for buck...

VBox are no doubt the best, I have under controlled circumstances tested Apple's Dynolicious software which seems hit and miss, but I rate it (when used with a 3rd party mount kit you have to buy separately) better than the Tesla GTech which tend to be both be fragile and inconsistant. They are overly ambitious with trap speeds and slightly optimistic with 1/4 mile times on average.

Of the affordable ones, the Passport GTimer is the most consistant and the most sturdy in my opinion. It actually seems to lean towards being conservative, hardly anyone who has run on mine has done a time they can't repeat on the drag strip.

With importing stuff you only have to pay tax if it's over $400 including shipping.

Some items dont carry any duty tax, ive ordered all sorts of things off eBay and also direct from sellers online stores, never paid a cent in tax.

Stuff sent via USPS goes through DHL terminal in Auckland, and I believe (based on my recent experience and some reliable info) they dont even check packages (no X-ray machine currently.)

red car

mainly 1/4 mile + trap speed, and 0-100kmph, not so much data logging, but any extra features that could come in handy would be nice.

I think you will find that anything above $50 can have an import tax put on it, have a look here:

It says "No revenue collection will be made if the total amount owing on the goods imported is less than $50" meaning if the duty is less than $50 they won't bother, since most items are at 12.5% it means you can usually spend $400 before they start looking...

Of course, there's quite a few things that have higher rates so it's only a general rule

You could maybe get a 1Hz USB GPS unit for $90ish and get some software to analyse the resultant data to give the speeds & traps. would be alright for 1/4 mile in a slowish car, maybe not so good for 0-100KM/h in a fast car as the sample rate wouldn't be high enough... but it would be cheap :D
