1NZFE Ist tune options
We have an 1NZFE powered Toyota Ist...
I like everything about it, except its power delivery. It is a bit gutless.
The stock engine (1NZFE) is 1.5L and produces ~80kW. My goal is 100-120kW (anything above that will be undrivable).
My budget (if I ever decided to go ahead) is ~$3000 not including labour (I will do most mechanical work).
Must stay auto (due to wife) and maintain A/C.
My options are:
Keep 1NZFE and:
N/A tune (cams+ecu) - but will that make it even more undrivable?
Supercharger - fuel economy will suffer greatly?
Turbo - requires touching bottom end, unless low boost and hope for the best (CR is ~10.5:1 on those).
Ditch 1NZFE and:
1ZZFE - cheaper and slightly smaller than 2ZZGE.
2ZZGE - ultimate solution - but space might be huge problem. Getting one within the budget could be also a problem..
The purpose of this modification is not a track car and not a drag car, but to be adequate for mountain passes.
Your thoughts on this?

I like the idea of supercharger, going to be more user friendly than cams no doubt?
Bit over the proposed budget, but:

I don't really know my econoboxes, but didn't some 1.5 Vitz RS came with a turbo?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Had a chap come in to work a few weeks back with a supercharged Ist, he said it was quite good on gas. Definitely what I want to do with our bB at some stage.
Cams are a mongrel to setup due to the lazy cam, and would maybe lose VVTi?

VVTi would seriously limit how extreme you could go on duration and lift

That is a good option, wander on the availability and price...

Ok, here is the question:
Does anyone know what is the length and width of 1ZZFE + Gearbox, what about 2ZZGE?
I am not really keen on modifying the 1NZFE due to requiring aftermarket ECU which will delete
1) knock sensor/closed loop ignition and
2) oxygen sensor/closed loop mixture,
unless I spend mega $$$.
If I transplant the more powerful engine I will retain those features along with reliability.
I just found another option of engine transplant:
2ZRFE that originally comes in latest yaris/ist, 1.8L, and produces 132Hp (similar to 1ZZFE).

2ZZGE engine only: 652 x 608 x 659 (LxWxH) (mm)
1ZZFE engine only: 639 x 586 x 632 (LxWxH) (mm)
1NZFE engine only: 550 x 550 x 650 (LxWxH) (mm) (my measurements +/- a few cm)
looks like a really tight squeeze, although 1NZFE has heaps of space around it (from furthest point of the engine ~100mm to radiator, ~100 mm to the firewall, ~80 mm to the chassis rail).
Here is some forum post I found regarding 2ZZGE into yaris:

however awesome a 2zz would be I just noticed it needs to stay auto.....
1zz would probley be better with an auto and you could even retrofit the up/down steering wheel shift buttons off the runx Z auto for a bit more control.
1zz would be cheaper to start and can always have a 2zz dropped it later quite easily on the search for more horses

This is correct and they have a sweet kit and rims. Would probably only cost you 3k plus yours traded in!
Thread ended! You should find one on a yard and test drive it. I tried one at my mates car yard and I was pretty impressed for a Fwd!
