Painting Mags

Post by FST4RD »

Hey all...
The old mans late model Merc is going in to get the front bumper and bonnet resprayed due to stone chips. His brother is doing the work, and his Merc happens to be almost the same colour silver as my mags.

Was wondering is the primer and paint that they use to paint cars is suitable to paint mags?

I would ring my uncle to check but he's not round at the moment.

Thanks

Yep, normal car paint would be fine, but they'll need an etch primer to make it stick to aluminium alloy. Sandblasting them first would also help.

The mags have a bit of scratching, not on the edges, more towards the middle (don't ask I bought them like that!), So I was going to give them a quick sand and smooth them out.

When I did my old Advans I sanded them, primer then gave about 5-6 coats of car paint and they came out fantastic!

Went all around the south island on them with no flaking!

Cool! Good to know.
I've been quoted moonbeams to get them painted/powdercoated, pretty much I could buy a new set of mags for the cost of getting all 4 wheels done!

Yeah dad is getting the good stuff for his Merc, he loves that car.
If I can get it done for a dozen beers I'll definitely be doing that.

The chap on here couldn't do them for $25 a wheel. If you know of a place in Christchurch that will do them for that let me know and I'll go there.

Just get spray cans if it has to be cheap as possible.

Anyone that primers and top coats a set of wheels for a box of beers is mad :P

Shit thats a bit steep, I had a set of 18s done around 18 monthsish ago, and that was $150 a wheel. I got the lip painted a different colour as the rest of the wheel aswell, if it was just one colour it would have been $100 per wheel.

GTRefinishers charge around $400 to paint a set of wheels I believe. Fair price considering the prep/time outlay etc.

I would probably prep them myself. I might take a leaf out of the above and sand, prime and bust out some decent spray paint lol As long as it looks decent from arms length...
