Tiptronics

So I have been thinking about tiptronics.
Has anyone tried to reprogram one to make it shift faster, make it more manualised, make able to shift into neutral etc just using the + & - so that the gear box is more like a sequential and able to leave it in + - all the time?
I'm sure if you can have an aftermarket computer to run the engine and everything that goes with it, that this could potentially be the same thing?

BP Legacys are programmable, you can also get improved valve assembly for the 5EAT gearbox that dramatically increases shifting speed and performance.

i think the BA on falcon's have something of a "learning" tiptronic

i dunno and could be talking out of my ass but i borrowed my dad's BA Falcon for a week (he never uses the tiptronic or exceeds 2500rpm) where as i did use the tiptronic and made the car see the redline whenever legally possible

got a call some time after giving it back "the $&#$% did you do it it - it thinks its a bloody racecar chopping right down and revving its tits off whenever i give it some jandal!"

it either needed the cobwebs blowing out or it "gets used" to a drivers habits?

I was reading about an Evo 7 GTA in Japan where they had played with the box and made it almost like a proper clutchless sequential. It only shifted when you flicked the gear lever, it was a lot faster in the change as well. Don't think they modified the internals either, more of an ecu thing. Would be kinda cool to have something like that.

I thought most of the triptronics "learnt" your driving habits, and adjusted to suit. At least most of the newer ones anyway.

True, they do learn, it was from BA onwards, as said above, most new tiptronics do. Still can't beat the feel of a manual box.

The old man had a late model turbo rvr with tiptronic box. I was thinking that if it shifted quicker, and when in tiptronic mode only shifted when you said to, as well as being able to shift into neutral and back into first so you could launch it would be pretty good.
I know the evo 10 is much like that.
Was just toying with the idea as my starion race car project is getting to the gear box stage of what I'm going to use.

True, they do learn, it was from BA onwards, as said above, most new tiptronics do. Still can't beat the feel of a manual box.

100% agree, although I would love a sequential box for the race car.

Nissans, in particular V35/M35 are learning Tiptronics also.
Guys in Aussie were reprogramming them for faster shifting though.

Also not sure if they do a kit for any other cars, but Works-Bell do a flappy paddle setup for Nissan tiptronics, convert your normal one in to carbon fibre paddles.

It *can* be done...but I wouldn't go there.

I don't recommend launching a tiptronic, turbo, AWD RVR. They are nothing like an Evo 10. The Evo X has a Getrag sequential twin clutch manual transmission that happens to have an automated shifting mode. It's not an automatic or tiptronic gearbox.

What you're asking about will absolutely destroy the tiptronic auto box and repairing one costs almost as much as an RVR is worth nowadays. Been there done that with a 99 Legnum VR4. If you want it to hold the revs a bit, reset the ECU and take it for a good thrash while it's relearning (I assume that the RVR has the INVECS-II trans?).

Not much point revving high anyway, power drops off very quickly because the boost tapers off after about 5000rpm on the stock tune.They're built/tuned for midrange punch not necessarily for top end.

I wouldn't do it to the RVR, I was thinking if I came across a RWD box that I could fit to the Starion and it could do what I wanted I would consider it.

Planetary gearsets inside auto boxes are not designed to withstand shock either. From neutral to drive, in full power...

Why not use a high stall torque converter? Would be similar to launching.

I'll probably just go for a w5* or rx7 series 4 or 5 box.

If you want sequential shifting, look at the Ikeya Formula shifter. Could possibly adapt it to work with what you want.
