Another "What are they like" Thread...'03 Caldina

Post by ee904age »

In my ongoing mission to find a replacement car, we've come across a 2003 Caldina ZT.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-ca ... 478094.htm

Does anyone have experience with these or anything else with the 1AZ engine?

Are the pretty similar in power delivery etc to a good old 3S, or do they lack lowdown torque like a lot of other late model 4 cylinder engines?

Ideally I'd test drive one, however Wanganui has very little to offer and would like to know what to expect before heading on a road trip.

steer well clear of that one, it has a 1AZFSE in it, avoid them like the plague, a 1AZFE is fine though.

the 1AZFSE engine is the direct injected version which has a high pressure injection pump on the head, they start to fail and pump petrol into the oil in the sump resulting in a run bottom end. The injectors and pump also fail on the injecting petrol side of things.

nice looking car, nice to drive, but steer clear of the #azfSe

Steer clear of anything GDI !!

I though it died out when mitsi stoped it years ago,
but it seems to be coming back in everything.

Have had one or two of those Caldina's through work too,
and agree with the previous comment.

Here is another reincarnation:
Appearing in the Toyota 86 (also known as the Toyota GT 86 in Europe, Scion FR-S in the USA and Subaru BRZ), the 4U-GSE is a boxer type engine with 4 cylinders and a bore and stroke of 86mm. The engine is identical to Subaru's flat-4 engine, the FA20 with a Toyota engine code. It features Toyota's D4-S direct and port injection systems, with a maximum power rating of 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) at 7,000 RPM and a maximum torque rating of 205 N·m (151 lb·ft) at 6,600 rpm

It's also in the Mazda Turbo's, Audi have it in their late stuff called FSE or FSI, The new commodore's have it, nissan call it Neo-DI in thier stuff.
it's every where !!!

We get the late Corona's in with it and the customer complains about surge at 100Kmh,
show them the lean burn sticker on the rear window and tell them it is unfixable.

Everythings going to DI now. Surely the tech must be better than when mitsi brought out GDI?

Aren't even WRC cars all DI now?

i have a turbo version of them and its ok. nothing special though, its a heavy car with only a 4 speed auto so its pig like. understeers very easily too.

positives are

spacious
good for distance driving ( fuel economy )
minimal road noise
foot hand brake

negatives

slow and very mild power delivery
understeers
heavy car with 4 speed is not very good for town driving ( fuel economy )
seems to fog up constantly
auto is annoying when in D so i use the tiptronic everywhere
very odd looking window shape behind back seat
foot hand brake
need to be lowered asap

Does the 1JZFSE run into the same issues with its direct injection?

dont know, haven't heard of them giving issues but there isn't the numbers of them around like AZT24# caldinas.

we supplied an 1AZFSE motor to go into a AZT24# that hadn't even done 120,000km
