New rims - Insurance

Post by TRD_TOY »

So i had a bit of an accident in my JZS161 Aristo and needed to get my rims replaced.

The Insurance company have come back to me with the following options. These will be 19" staggered.

Which ones do you guys think would suit my car best as they are different to what i originally had. i was sort of heading towards the Jarama or Stowes....

Donnington. Prefer concave to dish personally (brake clearance is also a bonus), but its a VIP type car, could suit either.

Genuine JDM or bust.

You wouldn't buy a Chinese car, same should apply to the wheels.

I'm going for Mallory Black too, mainly because with DISH being the in thing at the moment you either need to be serious about it (which none of these options are) or not try for that look.

If i could buy a wheel for $50 then I would not buy it.

You sir really have no idea about this. JDM yo brah

hear it all the time, story gets soooooo old.

Most of the wheels we sell are of a better quality than factory wheels.

If your car is worth 6-8k is it really worth spending the same amount on wheels?

I was always under the impression TSW made a decent quality product, they've been around for decades (longer than SSR even, I think you'll find). South African origin I think?

Either way, all of those options are pretty horrible. I'd pick the Stowe silver if I had a gun against my head and was forced to choose one. Aristo's lend themselves well to a chunky wheel design.

If you're not buying them for $50 a wheel, then the person you are buying them off is.

I know what they cost, I nearly invested $50k into doing it about 6 years ago. Feel free to post up some of the part numbers on the boxes your wheels come in. Would not take me long to find a supplier I could get a price off and could then post publicly to prove my point?

Anyone with some time could do the same looking through alibaba.

Only reason I didn't pursue was I only had $50k at the time which does not buy many lines. Alot of the suppliers I was talking to at the time had MOQ of 200 wheels, per line. One line being one stud pattern (some were multi fit) one width one size one colour one style one offset. Even hainvg a couple of styles, couple of widths and offsets added up to 20 lines. That was significatly more commitment than I could make.

Don't mistake me for one of your naive customers. I bought a sample set of wheels in even after I had decided I couldn't expand into rims. I just want some cheap drift rims for my sil on the cheap. I recall the shipping was more than the wheels, and even then it was barely over $100 landed. Anyway, these wheels looked alright, but were soft as butter. Went over the rumble strip at Ruapuna and they bent; couldnt get them balanced after that.

I say get genuine for a reason.

On actual inspection of those pics, I think Carthage in silver could look ok, if the offset is decent.

i did originally have a set of Volk Racing GT7's but unfortunately they cannot supply them anymore and are too damaged to repair....so this is the choice State insurance have given me.

I guess it depends what's on your policy. But I would have thought you could replace them with rims that would be worth the same. They will of course give you lots of options that cost a lot less

If there are other Volk wheels you like perhaps pressure them into supplying those instead.

Definitely ^

If I had Volks on my car, and had paid insurance premiums on them, then there is NO WAY in hell I would be settling for the proposed rims.

Simply dont settle for their offer, and tell them you want to find something of the same or better quality, as you shouldnt be forced to compromise on that, so they can save some money.
